Assimil Experiment: El Catalán sin esfuerzo - Day 47 - Lesson 45

Now, I'm listening only once before reading the Catalan text, because a second listening doesn't seem to help much at this point. Later on, after studying the whole lesson, I repeat listening as much as possible.

Time required for individual lessons (minutes)

Quaranta-tres (43) = 22
Quaranta-quatre (44) = 28
Quaranta-cinc (45) = 23

Total time for groups of lessons (hours)

1 to 7 = 2.1
8 to 14 = 3.1
15 to 21 = 2.8
22 to 28 = 3.8
29 to 35 = 3.1
36 to 42 = 3.4

I would add about 1.0 hour for each group due to repetitions during commute.

Total time

1 to 42 = 24.4 hours

2012 Language Report

German

I must say that although a global C1 hasn't been achived, my receptive skills are now at a solid C1 level and my productive skills are at a solid B2 level.

That said, this has been a great German learning year, not only because of the above mentioned improvements, but also because of a wonderful two weeks in Munich, lots of new stuff learned through my readings in German and the feeling of a much better understanding about the Germans and their culture.

I'm considering the possibility of another intensive month of German study during January/February. Besides that, next year I'll continue to do what I've been doing in the last month, i.e., read a lot everyday and listen to something at least twice a week.

Italian

I've been studying Italian grammar more seriously during the last weeks and I can already feel some improvements. I've seen movies, listened to radio and music and my receptive skills are definitely in the C1+ range.

However, due to some future professional events, I really need to speak with minimal fluency, it means, at least B2. I hope to be able to improve fast and enjoy the opportunity to speak with native speakers.

Catalan

As one can see above, I'm close to the beginning of the active phase. My plan is to finish the Assimil Experiment and continue to read, though this won't be a priority for the next year.

Korean

I've studied, not to completion, unfortunately, the great book "Sounds of Korean: A Pronunciation Guide", by M. Choo and W. O'Grady. After knowing this book, it's even more clear for me how important it is to have a good comprehension of phonetics at the beginning of the study of a new language.

None of my goals have been achieved, as German took almost all of my language study time. Korean is no longer on the top of my priorities, but I hope to restart studying it in the future.

Turkish

I've used a few courses, none of which I consider great. On the other hand, Turkish is now a language that I would like to learn, although not at high priority at this time.

Future plans

I'll start a new project on March 1st and open a new log when it feels that I'm ready to explain it.

I'd like to improve the knowledge of all languages that I already know, including Portuguese. I must however set some specific goals and find time among my other priorities. My first goal is to get back to Latin. Let's see how and when.

Assimil Experiment: El Catalán sin esfuerzo - Day 48 - Lesson 46

Another easy lesson, with lots of similar words. Anyway, the important thing is that I'm getting comfortable with this language and I'm sure that I'll be able to say that "I speak Catalan" in the not so far future.

Time required for individual lessons (minutes)

Quaranta-tres (43) = 22
Quaranta-quatre (44) = 28
Quaranta-cinc (45) = 23
Quaranta-sis (46) = 18

Total time for groups of lessons (hours)

1 to 7 = 2.1
8 to 14 = 3.1
15 to 21 = 2.8
22 to 28 = 3.8
29 to 35 = 3.1
36 to 42 = 3.4

I would add about 1.0 hour for each group due to repetitions during commute.

Total time

1 to 42 = 24.4 hours

Assimil Experiment: El Catalán sin esfuerzo - Day 49 - Lesson 47

This hasn't been a complex lesson, mostly because I don't care to memorize all words for all kinds of things. Even in Portuguese, I don't know most names of trees and call them just ... trees. Maybe my son will force me to change this, just as I'm know learning the names of all dinosaurs ...

Time required for individual lessons (minutes)

Quaranta-tres (43) = 22
Quaranta-quatre (44) = 28
Quaranta-cinc (45) = 23
Quaranta-sis (46) = 18
Quaranta-set (47) = 31

Total time for groups of lessons (hours)

1 to 7 = 2.1
8 to 14 = 3.1
15 to 21 = 2.8
22 to 28 = 3.8
29 to 35 = 3.1
36 to 42 = 3.4

I would add about 1.0 hour for each group due to repetitions during commute.

Total time

1 to 42 = 24.4 hours

My Catalan study for today has been reduced to repetitions while driving.

On the other hand, I'm studying Italian more and more. Now, besides "Canta che ti passa", I'm also studying the "Grammatica Avanzata della Lingua Italiana" and I've signed on with Tadoku.

I'll read "Il Nome della Rosa" and hope to, at least, start reading "Il Pendolo de Foucault" during this month. It's already very clear that I won't win this Tadoku, but I still hope to finish among the 20 better readers. The book is already good enough, but maybe I'd read it more slowly without this extra motivation ;-))

Assimil Experiment: El Catalán sin esfuerzo - Day 51 - Lesson 48 (incomplete)

Since I'll have lots of time, this lesson is going to be finished tomorrow.

The longest lesson, by far. It is interesting to remember that about 50 days ago, in spite of Catalan being an "easy" language, I couldn't understand very well some much shorter and more slowly spoken lessons.

The active phase hasn't started yet and now that the passive phase somehow proved to me that it works, without pain, I believe that this course will indeed bring me to an intermediate level.

Time required for individual lessons (minutes)

Quaranta-tres (43) = 22
Quaranta-quatre (44) = 28
Quaranta-cinc (45) = 23
Quaranta-sis (46) = 18
Quaranta-set (47) = 31
Quarante-vuit (48) = 28

Total time for groups of lessons (hours)

1 to 7 = 2.1
8 to 14 = 3.1
15 to 21 = 2.8
22 to 28 = 3.8
29 to 35 = 3.1
36 to 42 = 3.4

I would add about 1.0 hour for each group due to repetitions during commute.

Total time

1 to 42 = 24.4 hours

Assimil Experiment: El Catalán sin esfuerzo - Day 52 - Lesson 48 (finish) plus Lesson 49

Seventh review. Conjunctions. Ok, it's nice to have this organized, but way too easy and we are going to have only 3 more review lessons!

As I said in the previous message, I'm glad I'm understanding so much Catalan, which I couldn't do before. However, my complaints about the scarcity of grammar explanations remain.

At this point, I'm really curious about the active phase. I've never done this before and I hope that it'll be as well designed as the comprehension development in the passive phase, and we are going to "without pain" be able to produce texts in our target languages.

Time required for individual lessons (minutes)

Quaranta-tres (43) = 22
Quaranta-quatre (44) = 28
Quaranta-cinc (45) = 23
Quaranta-sis (46) = 18
Quaranta-set (47) = 31
Quarante-vuit (48) = 28
Quaranta-nou (49) = 10

Total time for groups of lessons (hours)

1 to 7 = 2.1
8 to 14 = 3.1
15 to 21 = 2.8
22 to 28 = 3.8
29 to 35 = 3.1
36 to 42 = 3.4
43 to 49 = 2.7

I would add about 1.0 hour for each group due to repetitions during commute.

Total time

1 to 49 = 28.1 hours

Assimil Experiment: El Catalán sin esfuerzo - Day 54 - Lesson 50

Once more, back to shorter lessons. The pattern is clear in the picture shown above. This is going to be a group of shorter lessons, the last 13 lessons will be longer.

I didn't realize at first how nice it is the Catalan emphatic construction "en + verb + de + adjective", at this point one of my favourite features of this language.

Time required for individual lessons (minutes)

Cinquanta (50) = 20

Total time for groups of lessons (hours)

1 to 7 = 2.1
8 to 14 = 3.1
15 to 21 = 2.8
22 to 28 = 3.8
29 to 35 = 3.1
36 to 42 = 3.4
43 to 49 = 2.7

I would add about 1.0 hour for each group due to repetitions during commute.

Total time

1 to 49 = 28.1 hours
