Still working hard (or hardly working, or some combination of both perhaps) on French. While I
am not making much progress in actually learning French, I do seem to be making some progress in needlessly
multiplying the number of logs I am maintaining.
I have been maintaining a French-focussed log ("18 Months of French") for a few months and have now started a
concurrent log ("TAC 2012 Romance/French (Spanky)) for another team TAC challenge (no, I have not warned my
new team mates about how unreliable a team mate I am, they can learn that in due course for themselves).

Forewarned. But I - for one - am looking forward to having you on the team, Spanky.

Okay, this past year has been a hot mess as far as language learning goes. My
progress, or more accurately, my complete lack of progress and my utter failure as a
TAC team mate over the past year, was partially captured to my embarrassment in a
number of different logs over the first few months of 2013, prior to the Accident.
By accident, I refer of course to my being trapped deep underground in a damp cave for
the last many months as a result of a spelunking expedition gone horribly astray.
Internet reception down there was really spotty, and also there were bats, a lot of
bats, which made studying a challenge.
I am hoping to make a clean start of things in 2014, continuing some previous efforts
with Spanish, launching yet again into Heisig's Japanese kanji, and as a new venture,
attempting to learn a bit of American Sign Language.
I will set up shortly a new log to record those efforts - this log seems too weighed
down by inertia for me to drag it along on a daily adventure. I will come back here
for a visit when I have some progress to report.

Okay, new doomed log for daily 2014 efforts set up …. same as it ever was:
Cada día 2014

Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right?...Am I wrong?
And you may say to yourself
My God!...What have I done?!"

Although I have already launched into Spanish, American Sign Language and re-launching
into kanji studying, I experienced a brief episode of separation anxiety from French
the
other night: I had patiently been waiting for Season 5 of Community, which aired on
January 2nd and which was completely awful, but just at the end, this unexpected
surprise, the only bright ray in an otherwise dismissal showing:
the Excel song
Not language-related, but just to remind myself that the show once had been fun, from
an earlier season:
I agree with brown Jamie Lee

The Community community has come to no concensus re: the identity of the singer of
this, and there is nothing officially indicated by the show itself AFAIK. I have also
read a number of comments on a couple of blogs that are very critical of the French
used in the song, including some from professed native French speakers asserting that
it took more than 10 seconds to even recognize this as French, which seems beyond
ridiculous to me but what do I know.
My guess, and a front runner in the speculation, is Coeur de Pirate, a singer from
Québec. For comparison:
Coeur de Pirate, Francis
Coeur de Pirate, Place de la
république

If it is Coeur de Pirate, perhaps the choice of a Canadian artist is by way of making amends for Jeff Winger's vicious attack on another Canadian music group, Barenaked Ladies, from an earlier season.

Who knew Serbian was so easy?
From the long-awaited episode 1 of season 3:
SHERLOCK: I didn’t know you spoke Serbian.
MYCROFT: I didn’t, but the language has a Slavic root, frequent Turkish and German
loan words. (He shrugs.) Took me a couple of hours.
SHERLOCK: Hmm – you’re slipping.
MYCROFT (smiling tightly): Middle age, brother mine. Comes to us all.
I will accordingly be swapping in Serbian for some other, harder language.
