Het is komende Zaterdag de verjaardag van mijn moeder, dus gisteren heb ik wat chocolaatjes gekocht, heel
lekkeren van een echte leuke winkel, en nu moet ik alleen maar een mooie brief schrijven, een misschien wat anders halen als ik iets mooi kan vinden. Dan op Woensdag alleen even in het post doen. Ik wilde een beetje in het Nederlands schrijven omdat het bent een heel lange tijd geweest sinds ik wat in het Nederlands geschreven heb. Niet goed! Mijn woordenschat is al verdwijnen! Gefeliciteerd met je moeder's verjaardag, Vos! I hate to sound like your Spanish teacher, but are you sure you're still a beginner in Dutch? Judging from your writing, I would say you're at least at an intermediate level. Interesting information about low standards in language education by the way. I would say that Dutch universities generally place the bar a little higher. English isn't a good example because they expect everyone to speak it so well already that they hardly teach the language at all before moving on to literature and linguistics. From what I've read in study guides and heard from friends, my own uni expects at least a B1 level from first year students of languages commonly studied in high school (so French, German, Latin and Ancient Greek) and they seem to aim to get you up to a C2 level at the end of the three years. For other languages, they assume some previous knowledge (especially for European languages) and the pace they expect of you is pretty intense. For instance, Arabic students are supposed to be at an intermediate level after one semester and at basic fluency after one and a half year. And that's in MSA and Egyptian Arabic. Thanks for the words of experience ellasevia. I'm going to go to the first 2 or 3 classes and see how I go in regards to speaking and understanding, and if I surprise myself and I don't do too bad, then I'll definitely move up to the advanced class. Although I've already had a quick read through a few pages of the course book for the intermediate class, and I can already basically understand everything, nor is the grammar anything I haven't already covered. It would certainly be good to go over it all again for reinforcements sake, but I don't think if I'm to stay in intermediate it's going to be a very challenging class. Once again, I'll wait for the classes to start in two weeks time and then take it from there. But I definitely want to be pushed and for my Spanish to grow a good deal this year, so if intermediate can't offer that, then "advanced" it will be. Also what you said in regards to using past tenses and object pronouns, I seriously think that's what made her feel that I knew a bit too much for this class. Again, it's a strange feeling realising that your idea of intermediate and advanced levels could be so much higher than that of a university. Where have standards gone people!

My poor Dutch, so many mistakes! Ahh dear, the language is unravelling before me. Ok enough with the dramatics. Well that sounds much better, C2 by the end of 3 years, fantastic! Atleast they're setting sights high over there, whereas here I believe only in the last semester of third year do you start C1 material, and it could even be that one would still be doing B2 material. Either way I much prefer the standard of language learning which is going on over in Nederland. Although basic fluency in Arabic after 1 and a half years, jesus. I'd imagine that would involve a looooot of work. Nu ja, hoe gaat het met je Renee? Alles goed in jou deel van de wereld? CocoRosie, ¡tan bien! He estado escuchando a tanta música estas días pasadas, probablamente porque he
acabado de recibir un montón de nueva música. Como The Empyrean de John Frusciante, que es un disco inspirado. Y Grey Oceans de CocoRosie que es iqual de inspirado y tan bello y conmovedor. Pappo's Blues que es rock argentino desde los 70's, música genial también. Música... Cómo tú enriqueces a mi espíritu y llevar mis días a lugares más altos. De momento hace lloviendo un montón, hay trueno y relámpago y todo el cielo está oscuro. Me gusta mucho este tipo de tiempo. Especialmente ya que hoy ha estado un día muy caluroso y húmedo, y ahora la atmósfera se está quedando más fresca y más ligera.. entonces voy a dormir muy tranquilo esta noche. Basic fluency in Arabic in less than two years does sound like a nightmare. But then, if someone has a degree in Arabic, or any language for that matter, I assume they speak it better than the average second language speaker. In the Netherlands, English students especially are held to a high standard because pretty much everyone speaks English so you really have to speak it exceptionally well to justify your degree. When I first announced my intention to study English, a lot of acquaintances asked me why "because you already speak it", as if studying a language at uni involves nothing but learning to speak it. And then there are all those people who think the only professions open to me will be teacher and translator. Grr... Maar hoe dan ook, het gaat wel aardig in mijn deel van de wereld. ;-) De winter loopt langzaam ten einde en je merkt al duidelijk dat de lente op komst is. Of misschien zijn het die heerlijk ruikende hyacinten in m'n vensterbank. Ikzelf heb het op het moment ontiegelijk druk met school. Wat bezielde me in hemelsnaam om zoveel vakken te nemen! If you don't mind me asking, what do you wish to be doing once you've completed your degreee? I'm completely unawares as to what one can do with a degree in languages, so I'm asking here strictly out of my utter ignorance. Hahaha damn uni and all there assignments! I'm hearing you.. I've got an exam next week and a major project due the week after. Although the project is rather enjoyable if you're plants and nature inclined, the only annoying part about it really is having to do it, rather than simply doing it out of leisure. But would I have done it simply out of leisure? Probably not. So I guess the conclusion is the assignment is a good thing. ...Sorry to take you through that last part of inner dialogue there. ¡Hola gente! Me siento muy bien hoy, he hecho muchas cosas que quería hacer durante la semana, y además los dos días pasados he estudiado mucho español; añadiendo nuevas palabras a ANKI, escuchando a muchos podcasts y música, y por fin, he empezado de nuevo Colloquial Spanish 2, ya que las dos semanas pasadas no había tenido tiempo a hacerlo debida a mis clases. Unos días muy frutíferos. He estado usando un nueva página web también, se llama Spanish news bites. Es un recurso genial, lleno de muchas entrevistas y historias sobre todos tipos de temas. Y además hay audio con todo. También debería decir que he encontrado un cuarto en una casa compartida con dos chicas muy divertidas y simpáticas, y la casa tiene un patio trasero muy grande (pues, grande para una casa en la ciudad) que voy a convertir en un jardín muy lozano (¿O exuberente? ¿Cuál suena mejor?), lleno de verduras y hierbas, y con unas plantas preciosas con floras bellas.. ¡No puedo esperar! No había tenido un jardín, cuanto más un patio trasero dentro de años. Voy a documentar el proceso de convertirlo (tomar fotos ectétera), ya que está bastante agreste de momento y estará mi primer jardín de que yo habré hecho. ¡Emocionado!
