It's a great idea, but I don't see how it would work for paintings, sculpture or classical music?

Love the inter-Scandinavian poem btw, thanks daegga!

I'll try to find some Finland Swedish content.

I love Scandinavian literature!

Here's one of my favourite poems (Carl Almqvist - XIX century):

Här uppå berget ligga gummans svarta knotor:
hon, som i våras här brann uppå bål.
Nu skall du få höra sagan om röda elden:
höra huru gumman i bålet satts, att brinna.
Gumman, hon tog vita stickor av furu.
Men sina stickor satte hon i en mur.
Sakta hon steg till muren och ur stickorna
darrhänt mjölkade hon åt barnena små.
Men utur rika prästens ko var den söta mjölken. -
Barnena fingo stå vid modrens bål.

August Challenge
I freely admit to a certain passion for the late Eighteenth Century and Carl Michael Bellman falls right into that timeframe. I’ve tried to read and translate a few of his poems, but the one which had the greatest impact on me is Märk hur vår skugga. Bellman himself set the poem to music, and it’s the haunting music more than the words, I suspect, that won me over.

N:o 81 FREDMANS EPISTEL

    Grafsten öfver vår Syster.

* * *

     Ach längtansvärda och bortskymda skjul,
    Under de susande grenar,
Där Tid och Döden en skönhet och ful
    Til et stoft förenar!
Til dig aldrig Afund sökt någon stig,
Lyckan, eljest uti flygten så vig,
    Aldrig kring Grifterna ilar.
Ovän där väpnad, hvad synes väl dig?
    Bryter fromt sina pilar.

* * *

     Lillklockan klämtar til Storklockans dön,
    Löfvad står Cantorn i porten;
Och vid de skrålande Gåssarnas bön,
    Helgar denna orten.
Vägen opp til Templets griftprydda stad
Trampas mellan Rosors gulnade blad,
    Multnade Plankor och Bårar;
Til dess den långa och svartklädda rad,
    Djupt sig bugar med tårar.

* * *

     Så gick til hvila, från Slagsmål och Bal,
    Grälmakar Löfberg, din maka;
Där, dit åt gräset långhalsig och smal,
    Du än glor tilbaka.
Hon från Danto bommen skildes i dag,
Och med Hänne alla lustiga lag;
    Hvem skall nu Flaskan befalla.
Torstig var hon och uttorstig är jag;
    Vi ä torstiga alla.

Sorry it took me so long to answer, but as you may have noticed, I’m rarely online these days.

I see what you mean about visual arts and music, but let me explain how I came to this idea about future challenges and maybe it will make a little more sense.

A few weeks ago I was thinking about “culture” (of the high-brow Western variety) and was trying to see what contribution the Nordic countries have made. Once I’d listed poets, dramatists and novelists (literature is my field, so those came relatively easily), I struggled to come up with other names. Apart from Munch (Norwegian painter), Sibelius (Finnish composer), Milles (Swedish sculptor) I couldn’t think of any other artist off the top of my head. Not exactly impressive, don’t you think? And what is even worse is that at least theoretically I’m someone invested in Scandinavian culture and therefore probably better informed than the average European (non-Nordic) person on the topic.

The questions remain: where are all the Scandinavian architects, painters, sculptors, composers? Who have I forgotten? Who do I need to discover?

It seemed reasonable to me to dedicate a little time to research these topics, and that’s why I came up with those proposed challenges. And even if it can probably be done in English or in our native languages, I’m sure we can find even more information if we use our TLs.

Anyway, that’s just a proposal, if people don’t find it appealing enough, we should probably come up with other ideas.

Oh, I wasn't criticizing the challenge ideas, I just don't understand how it can work. But I'm excited to see how you arrange it.

And well, there's Alvar Aalto and Akseli Gallen-Kallela at least. And there's a Finland-Swedish painter that I'm very sure you know ;)

(Been to the Milles' park, btw. loved it!)

Your cryptic clue didn’t ring a bell at all (hangs head in shame!) and I had to google your words to see whom you might be referring to. I found Albert Edelfelt. Is it him? I must confess, I’ve never heard of him: I feel like such a philistine!   :-(

I wonder whether my fellow Italian, Sarnek, knows about him.

I had a look at some of Edelfelt’s paintings online and I like them very much, so thank you, thank you, thank you Serpent for pointing me in the right direction.

And actually, this is exactly what I had in mind with the challenges: inspire and help each other to widen our horizons and explore worthy artists and their works that we’ve ignored so far. I know I need it and maybe others might want to join me in this journey of discovery.
