There are so many complicated theories about the effects of different activities like listening and reading, how they will affect this or corrupt that. Do what you want to do in the language but get in contact with the language. It is not that complicated.
If you are motivated to learn, and pursue the language with a spirit of independence, searching out content to learn from and people to talk to, and if you do not resist the language, and if you can imitate "them", and see yourself as one of "them", you will achieve all you want to achieve. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I agree that this thread is too long and should be closed.It's up to the administrator to do it.
It's because some people like methods and every aspect of them to be controled and managed to achieve "maximum efficiency" more than actually listening to audiobooks or turn on the radio for some foreign broadcast.. Do not resist the language! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I agree with above points. I was shocked to see the teaching methods of American professors. They are not qiute different from those that are taught by teachers in non-english-speaking countries. I bought a product made by a new york university. One of the professors was a phd - was going through some boring grammar drills on the blackboard. And he was teaching the same boring rules:
Would you+like+something Do you wanna something? etc....what he was speaking in his own words was more more helpful to me than what he was exactly teaching. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Many people (the majority?) pay more attention to WHO says something than to WHAT is said.
That is in contradiction with Rule Number One of thinking: Amicus Plato sed magis amica veritas. This major flaw in human thinking is rampant on this board, too. “Ardaschir himself said...” “God herself/himself said...” “Assimil...” “Pimsleur...” “FSI...” I have nothing against Ardaschir – I, as many here, admire him. I’ve read some of his posts, he is really a great man, and a real gentleman. But gentlemen can be wrong, too. When I post something like this Hic sunt leones: www.stultorum.pochta.ru\aaaa\americageography.gif or say censorship is rampant in the YOU ESS ov AI, I have nothing against individual human beings who just happen to be North Americans. I have nothing against polyglots, either. Some of them know twenty languages, but, unfortunately, have nothing to say. My country is the world and my religion is to fight stupidity (my own in particular), and stupidity, they say, is more plentiful than hydrogen in the Universe. Is that your perception of the average American? LOL, very amusing. I'm half american, a dual citizen and have spent a great deal of time in "YOU ESS ov AI".
