I've been busy setting up the site these last couple of days. Google Docs (spreadsheet)
is really good for editing the bilingual texts. Instead of downloading the RTF file,
opening it, saving it, and re-uploading it to make a change, and worrying about
multiple versions, you can just edit it directly online. It's much better.

There is the potential to generate some funds by selling the edited texts as books on
Amazon, and also as ebooks for kindle etc. This can be arranged quite easily. This
revenue could compensate in part those who put their time into editing the texts. The
bilingual texts would still be available for free online as A4 formatted PDFs for
printing, and HTMLs, for online viewing with a computer.

I would need a number of people, someone for every language, who could take
responsibility for selecting books and editing the aligned texts. They could do the
work themselves, or coordinate the work of others. I already have people for Arabic,
Persian and Russian. You would need to have an interest in literature, some experience
in translation would be useful, and a good command of the languages involved. You could
expect to be modestly compensated for your time from the proceeds from the sale of the
hard copies. Send me a PM if it sounds interesting to you.

For Persian, I will post En/Per and Fr/Per versions of 'The Little Prince' shortly
(using my own English translation). Any volunteers to read the Persian text?

Count of Monte Cristo:

Volumes 1-3

Volumes 4-6

(These are Excel files. I think any word-processor would struggle with a table this size, but the layout is basically the same as the previous RTF files.)

I realise I have broken many of the links to the RTF files in this thread when creating a new site with the domain omilia.org. All these texts can still be accessed if you change the domain in the link to omilialanguages.com . Will get the omilia.org site up and running soon.

I bought a used feed-scanner and a heavy duty guillotine. This will make scanning books
much easier. I have blueleaf-book-scanning.com in the past, but the turnaround is about
two weeks, and the costs add up.

Is that how they typically scan books? What can we do here to help out? Clean up texts? And thanks for the Count of Monte-Cristo, it is definitely huge!

BTW, I started fixing the misaligned segments flagged automatically by the alignment script (they're marked with ###), which is not easy, because in most dialogs several French sentences have been combined to one English sentence.
Once I'm done with it and DavidW has finished setting up his web site for collaborative editing, it would be great if someone could do a second and possibly a third pass, because not all misalignments have been automatically flagged and I'm pretty sure that I myself must have made some alignment errors.

It'd be nice to be able to work on them online, that way you could do maybe a few chapters whenever you have some free time and someone else could pick up where you left off. Doing an entire book (like the Count of Monte-Cristo) is a big undertaking! I can run through it afterwards and look for further unaligned sections. I glanced through the first file and the translation seems to stray off in quite a few places.
