आजकल मेरी पढ़ाई ठीक चल रही हैं। कभी कभी मेरी पढ़ाई रुक जाती हैं क्योंकि मैं आलसी [हो जाता] हूँ या मुझे दूसरा काम
[होता है]। जब मुझे कुछ फ़ुरसत [हो], तब मुझे हिंदी ही पढ़नी चाहिए। मेरी शिक्षिका ने [मेरी] बहुत मदद [की] है। मैंने उसे बताया कि अभी हिंदी बोलने का अभ्यास सबसे ज़रूरी बात है क्योंकि इस क्लास [का or में] एक ही इम्तिहान है और मैं उसमें भारतीय शिक्षक से बात करूंगा। मैं शब्द और व्याकरण सीखता हूँ, लेकिन अगर मैं अपनी शब्दावली और व्याकरण की जानकारी इस्तेमाल नहीं करता हूँ, तो मैं अपनी हिंदी में सुधार नहीं करूँगा। आज मुझे एहसास हुआ [just 'एहसास हुआ'] कि मुझे हिंदी बोलने-वाले लोगों से बात करना बहुत पसंद है। आज मुझे दो दोस्तों [से] मिलना था। [just to be sure, this translates to 'today I had to meet two friends'] वो छोटी सी बातचीत थी, लेकिन मज़ा आया। मैंने मोसेस/लाउशू का "लेवल अप विडीओ" देखा है और मेरे ख़याल से वह बहुत अच्छा है और मुझे भी ऐसा करना चाहिए। [मज़ेदार fits better, 'मज़ा' is strictly a noun] और मददगार है। [मेरे, oblique case on विश्वविद्यालय here] विश्वविद्यालय का त्यौहार ख़त्म हो गया है, तो मैंने पिछले हफ़्ते में क्या किया? कुछ ख़ास नहीं... मैं अक्सर लॉन्ग आइलैंड (मेरा होमटाउन) जाता हूँ, मगर [इस] बार मैं अपने दोस्त (if it was more than one friend you were talking of, it'd be दोस्तों, the oblique-plural) के साथ स्कूल [के शहर में रहा था] । हमने बहुत बॉलीवुड की फ़िल्में देखी और दुकानों से कुछ चीजें [खरीदीं]। इस शहर में कोई हिन्दुस्तानी रेस्टोरेंट नहीं है, तो यह बुरी बात है इसलिए मैं हिन्दुस्तानी भोजन खाने का इंतज़ार नहीं कर सकता। मैं असली में थोड़ी ज़्यादा अंग्रेज़ी के शब्द (exam, grammar, etc.) इस्तेमाल करता हूँ क्योंकि यह तो आम है, पर मैं लिख रहा हूँ इसलिए मुझे दुसरे शब्द इस्तेमाल करना [चाहिए]। I've been lurking around your log quite frequently for a few months, it's an absolute delight to read. Lest I manage to discourage you, please be aware your Hindi is exceptionally amazing for a foreign learner. I know of people who live in India for years without gaining enough proficiency to string a sentence together. Hindi grammar is quite a tough nut to crack, it'd just take a little more regular use. I was delighted on seeing your perfect use of 'अपना', even native speakers often falter on that. Here's a useful website for grammar, it's written in a rather dry style, but it's quite useful as a reference when you need to know how to use the oblique case or the subjunctive mood. hindilanguage.info Also, I'm embarrassed that you had to watch 'Desi Boyzz', the few incidences of jingoism in that film were enough to make me squirm in almost physical agony. :P An ostentatious, upfront and even delusional brand of nationalism is endemic to South Asia. To boost your self-confidence, watch a couple of Pakistani Urdu movies too. That way you'll have a wondrous epiphany that for all that effort, you didn't just learn one language, you got another for free! I recommend 'Khuda Kay Liye' and 'Bol'. I speak quite slowly, but I know this happens. My tutor said my pronunciation is good so I just have to focus on grammar. When I need to say/write something or I have homework, I say/write something difficult because I want to learn new things. आज मैं बॉलीवुड की फ़िल्मों के बारे में बात करूँगा। मुझे कौनसी फ़िल्में पसंद है? और अभिनेत्रियाँ/abhinetaaoN? मेरी
पहली बॉलीवुड फ़िल्म "देवदास" थी; कई "देवदास" वाली फ़िल्में हैं लेकिन मैं संजय ली बंसाली की फ़िल्म के बारे में बात कर रहा हूँ। मुझे लगा कि मुझे कोई नाचने वाले फ़िल्म पसंद नहीं है, पर देवदास ने मुझे तंग नहीं किया। इस बात ने मुझे चौंक दिया था। मैंने बाद में कुछ और बॉलीवुड फ़िल्में देखी (साथिया, ब्लैक, दिल से)। Today I will talk about Bollywood movies. Which films do I like? And actresses/actors? My first Bollywood film was Devdas; there are several "Devdas" movies, but I'm talking about Sanjay Lee Bhansali's movie. I thought I wouldn't like a film with dancing, but Devdas didn't annoy me. This surprised me. After that, I saw a few more. उन दिनों से मैंने बहुत सारी अच्छी फ़िल्में देखी है। "देव डी" शायद मेरी मनपसंद फ़िल्म हो। मेरे ख्याल से इस फ़िल्म का पूरा साउंडट्रैक अच्छा है; हर गाने दुसरे गानों से अलग है। फ़िल्म के किरदार दिलचस्प हैं। मुझे "पिंजर" भी बहुत पसंद है। मैंने उपन्यास नहीं पढ़ा है लेकिन फ़िल्म तो अच्छी है। उर्मिला मातोंडकर का अभिनय बहुत अच्छा है। मुझे "उड़ान" देखने में आनंद आती है। इस फ़िल्म एक लड़के के बारे में है। लड़के की ज़िन्दगी काफ़ी मुश्किल है - उसको स्कूल से निकाल दिया गया और उसको अपने पिता के साथ रहना चाहिए। दिक्कत है कि यह आदमी बहुत शराब पीता है और वह गुस्सेल हो जाता है इसलिए वह लड़के को मार डालता है। मैं उड़ान देखने के लिए उत्साहित करता हूँ। एक और अच्छी फ़िल्म "हंगामा" है। हालाँकि मुझे हर मज़ाक का मतलब समझ में नहीं आता, मुझे देखने में आनंद आती है। परेश रावल बहुत हास्यजनक आदमी है। मैंने कुछ फ़िल्मों के बारे में लिखी है पर दूसरी अच्छी फ़िल्में हैं (लम्हें, चाची चार सौ बीस, धोबी घाट, शोर इन द सिटी, आवारापन, कलयुग)। Since those days I've seen many good movies. Dev D may be my favorite. In my opinion the whole soundtrack is great; each song is different from the other. The movie's characters are interesting. Pinjar is also very good. I haven't read the novel, but the film is good. Urmila Matondkar's acting is excellent. I really enjoy watching Udaan. This film is about a boy. The boy's life is quite difficult - he got kicked out of school and must live with his father. The problem is that this man drinks a lot of alcohol, becomes angry, and therefore hits the boy. I encourage (you) to watch Udaan. One other good film is Hungama. Even though I don't understand the meaning of every joke, I enjoy watching it. Paresh Rawal is a very funny man. I've written about some movies, but there are other good ones as well (Lamhe, Chachi Chaar Sau Bis, Dhobi Ghat, Shor in the City, Awarapan, Kalyug). आजकल मेरी मनपसंद अभिनेत्री कोनकोना सेन शर्मा है। उसका अभिनय बहुत अच्छा है और जब भी वह और राहुल बोस साथ साथ हैं, तो मुझे यही फ़िल्म पसंद है। मैं नंदिता दास पसंद करता हूँ और ज़ाहिरी बात है कि माधुरी दीक्षित अच्छी है। नंदिता दास के विचार और सक्रियतावाद काफ़ी अच्छे हैं। और माधुरी? मेरे लिए उसे नाचने में सबसे अच्छी है। और हाँ - मुझे लगता है कि ये औरतें सुन्दर भी हैं :D। ओ! और तब्बू भी मुझे अच्छा लगता है! Nowadays my favorite actress is Konkona Sen Sharma. Her acting is very good and whenever she and Rahul Bose are together, I like the movie. I like Nandita Das and of course Madhuri Dixit is good. Nandita Das' opinions and activism are quite good. And Madhuri? For me she is the best at dancing. And yes - I think these women are also beautiful. Oh! And I also really like Tabu! मुझे इरफ़ान ख़ान बहुत पसंद है और मैं "पान सिंह तोमर" देखने का इंतजार नहीं कर सकता हूँ। भारत में सब लोग आमिर ख़ान से प्यार करते हैं और मुझे भी वह पसंद है। मनोज बजपाई बहुत अच्छा अभिनेता है और "शूल" में वह मुझे प्रभाव डाला। नसीरुद्दीन शाह अच्छा है; मेरे लिए उसकी आवाज़ विशेष है। I really like Irfan Khan and I can't wait to watch Paan Singh Tomar. In India everyone loves Aamir Khan and I too like him. Manoj Bajpai is a great actor and in Shool he impressed me. Naseeruddin Shah is good; for me his voice is special. इस सेमेस्टर में तीन और दिनों हैं। मेरी हिंदी परीक्षा गुरूवार थी। मुझे काफ़ी डर लग रहा था। हालाँकि मेरी दोस्त/शिक्षका ने कहा

My Hindi exam was on Thursday. I was feeling quite scared. Even though my friend/teacher said she'd help me, I was thinking about mistakes. A few days ago I got a message; the message told me "this is the teacher who will give you the exam". This teacher is new; the first Hindi exam was with a different teacher. "Is this a good thing or not?" The new teacher doesn't know how my Hindi is, but perhaps her exam will be more difficult than the first. The first time, I got a B, but speaking was very difficult for me and the teacher spoke quite a bit of English with me. Even though I was scared after reading the message, I realized that learning a lot would require more than one day. Worrying wasn't necessary so I relaxed and watched some Hindi films (Soundtrack is quite good). After going to the room, the exam began. We spoke for 10 or 15 minutes and after this I read two paragraphs. The last thing was dictation exercises. My exam was fine, but it wasn't perfect. I understood everything (and was happy that she didn't use any English words) but made some mistakes in speaking. After a few minutes, she showed me the rubric; I got an A! And she said that I can meet her if I have any questions or want to talk. My friend/tutor has given me a lot of help so to her I must say thank you very much! आजकल मैं काफ़ी पढ़ता हूँ, लेकिन कुछ नहीं लिखा या बोला हूँ। मैं अपनी दोस्त एक बार से मिला हूँ और हमारी मुलाक़ात के
दौरान, उसने मुझे दो पत्रिकाएँ दिए जो उसकी माँ ने खरीदी। वे महिला पत्रिकाएँ हैं, पर इसके बावजूद मुझे वे पढ़ना पसंद हैं। हिंदी सीखने के लिए मैं कुछ भी पढ़ूँगा! इससे पहले मैंने सिर्फ़ दो और पत्रिकाएँ की कोशिश पढ़ी हूँ; पर वे काफ़ी मुश्किल थीं मेरे लिए। तो मुझे आश्चर्य था कि ये महिला पत्रिकाएँ (नाम "सखी" है) परफ़ेक्ट हैं। मैं काफ़ी समझ सकता हूँ, लेकिन मैं काफ़ी सारी शब्द नहीं जानता हूँ। मैं पहली पत्रिका पढ़ चुकी हूँ, तो मैं दूसरी पत्रिका पढ़ रहा हूँ। मुझे एहसास हुआ है कि हालाँकि मैं कई घंटों के लिए पढ़ सकता हूँ, मैं इन घंटों में लगभग बीस ही पन्ने पढ़ता हूँ। इसलिए मैं अब से पन्ने ही गिनाऊँ। Lately I study a lot, but haven't written or spoken. I met up with my friend and during our meeting she gave me two magazines that her mom bought. They're women's magazines, but despite this I enjoy reading them. For learning Hindi I'll read anything! Before this I tried to read only two other magazines, but they were quite difficult for me. So I was surprised that these women's magazines are perfect. I understand quite a bit, but there are quite a few words that I don't know. I've already finished the first one, so I'm reading the second. I realized that although I read for several hours, in this time I only read about 20 pages. So from now on I'll only count pages. पढ़ने के अलावा मैं एक कार्यक्रम देखता हूँ। मैंने आमिर खान का "सत्यमेव जयते" के बारे में सुना हूँ, पर अब तक कभी नहीं देखा हूँ। यह कार्यक्रम कुछ महत्वपूर्ण विषय पर चर्चा करता है। कुछ लोग कार्यक्रम पे आते हैं और उनकी कहानियाँ बताते हैं। Aside from reading, I watch a program. I've heard about Aamir Khan's Satyamev Jayate, but until now I've never watched it. This program discusses some important topics. People come on the show and tell their stories. Corrections are welcome as always! ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------ -- I've also started watching the sole season of Survivor India on youtube. It's rather nice to watch as there is rarely a word that I don't understand; I can just watch and enjoy. I'll try to get through the whole season. And going back to Satyamev Jayate, it's really a wonderful show. And from a language perspective, I love hearing the different ways in which the guests on the show speak. If I were some kind of language nerd or something, I might even re-watch certain parts if I particularly like the person's accent. But that's purely hypothetical... A few weeks ago I finally watched one movie I have: Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara. Initially I would have said it's a good movie with a few excellent scenes, but after several more viewings, I want to call this one of my favorite Bollywood films. I love the chemistry between the three leads and Hrithik's character's transformation in particular is just amazing to watch. Despite not being a Katrina fan, I love just about everything about this film. Today I did the unfortunately necessary long drive to an Indian media store and grocery store. I somehow ended up buying seventeen DVDs... but hey they were cheap anyway. Also got a variety of stuff from the market. Rose kulfi is just too amazing! Achaar and paratha too... Also grabbed the three Hindi magazines on the shelves - didn't really care what they were about. The fact that I didn't speak to anyone in Hindi today is a sign that I still need work when it comes to speaking without any worries, but I have definitely improved. I'm more comfortable and usually look forward to any opportunity to speak with natives. I recently received Usha Jain's Intermediate Hindi Reader and Advanced Hindi Grammar in the mail. I have only looked at them a little bit, but so far they look great. The reader seems excellent - there is a variety of readings: poems, short stories, essays, etc. A vocabulary list comes after every text - they are a bit exhaustive at times, but in the end this is more of a benefit than anything. I didn't think my book came with the audio CD, but to my surprise, I noticed tonight that it is indeed there! So this will be very helpful. And the advanced grammar covers some really subtle points; things that won't sink in for a while, but I'll enjoy reading through it! I had planned on writing only in Hindi from now on in this log, but I had some things to say this time and I wasn't able to write all of it well in Hindi. I would love it if you kept writing at least a little English in this log, I love
reading it and won't be able to if you write in Hindi! For some reason I'm really drawn to this language, but I definitely won't be touching it for a year or two. By the way, I just posted in the resources room about an interesting resource I come across in the library called "learn Hindi" by Star Publications. I was impressed to find the accompanying book was written almost entirely in the Devangari script. It could be worth checking out. Sorry about my late response! I haven't had any kind of stable internet connection until now. Yeah I will continue to write some English too. And if I write in Hindi I will always translate it anyway. And hmm I had never heard of this resource until you mentioned it, but it does sound interesting. But yeah it seems to be out of stock everywhere I looked. Thanks for bringing it up and for reading my log! Well a new semester has started which means I've already had a couple of Hindi sessions with my tutor. The other language news is that I'm in an Ancient Greek class this semester. The grammar will definitely be tricky for me, but I plan on working hard enough to make great progress with Hindi and do well enough with Greek. Having my own apartment this semester (i.e. no roommates) means I read everything out loud. I've been using the intermediate reader quite a bit; so far this is one of my favorite resources ever! It's so nice to have a little glossary after each text instead of the usual ordeal of cross-checking words on several websites and still not getting a correct definition. While I generally take learning gender very seriously, with the amount of words I'm learning passively every day, I simply can't memorize the gender of each one! But anytime I want to use a word actively I learn its gender, so the situation will gradually change as I turn passive vocabulary into active. Oh and I haven't used Anki in a long time, but I find that nowadays I'm able to remember quite a few new words without reviewing them in such ways. But I still write some of them down to have them available. Speaking is still a bit of a disaster in the grammar department, although it's always comforting to know that I can at least get my points across and communicate. I have no problem with getting my writing skills down well before learning to speak well, but I really have to write more often! A few months ago I wrote a bit on Lang-8, so I should get back to doing that. I received another 17 or so Bollywood DVDs from a friend recently, so now I have even more listening material...! I haven't gotten around to watching much all the way through yet, but I did see Page 3 and Omkara - both excellent. The further I get into my studies, the more I disagree with the idea of "doing a little each day". Everyone is different of course, and not everyone has a lot of time for studies, but I feel as though significant (and perhaps relatively quick progress) can't be made with just an hour a day. The amount of exposure alone needed is incredible! For passive skills alone I need tons of contact with the language, and then there's getting corrections and whatnot for active skills. Guess this is why it's so important to learn a language you enjoy studying! For Ancient Greek we've started learning the alphabet. We're using "Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek" (book 1). I've been reading the Greek passages quite a bit solely to get a better feel for the alphabet. Learning will be much easier for me if I don't need to stare at each word for 10 seconds just to pronounce it. That's about all I can say about the class for now. It's interesting to see certain words which we use in English in their original form. And for me the alphabet is pleasing to look at so it's nice to be able to make some sense out of it. My language studies haven’t been going exactly as I had expected them to, but I don’t
really mean that in a bad way. Basically I’ve been balancing Hindi and Ancient Greek studies better than I thought I’d be able to. While I have a bit more course work than usual, I also have more free time in general, so this really helps. During Hindi tutoring sessions (which are three times a week), we cover speaking and/or writing. At the very beginning of class I always have to write a paragraph or so about whatever I’d like. Some other writing assignments involve translating sentences from English to Hindi. I particularly like this exercise because it allows me to isolate my grammar mistakes and properly learn certain grammar structures. And then of course there is speaking. Usually my tutor will put me in some kind of situation or simply ask me about a certain topic and we take it from there. Other than these sessions my Hindi studying has been mostly about passive skills. I should do more writing (although it’s the one skill which I don’t always enjoy practicing) and I try to do some self-talk; I think doing more of the latter every day will help me significantly. Whenever I find a show/serial of some kind, I start watching it but never get past more than a few episodes. But I’m currently trying to fix this with Adaalat. This is a pretty formulaic courtroom drama in which a lawyer named K.D. Pathak (played well by Ronit Roy) proves his clients to be innocent even when it seems they are surely guilty. I’m currently on episode fifteen which is a record for me when it comes to watching one Hindi show! There are definitely some words I don’t understand (usually of the Urdu/Persian/Arabic variety) and it’s usually the prosecutor’s speech. Speaking of the prosecutor, I don’t know what will happen in the many future episodes, but I greatly prefer Maya Phadnis to the other prosecutors that have appeared! Another show I’ve discovered is Aap Ki Kachehri. I don’t enjoy it that much and haven’t watched a lot of it, but I like the Hindi spoken on it because it’s not the usual clear/clean, standard Hindi you’d find in serials; therefore it’s nice to get exposure to it. I haven’t been watching any Bollywood lately, but tonight is the start of a short break from school, so I’ll try to change that. Barfi is supposed to be great and I’d like to see Heroine as I’m a fan of Bhandarkar’s work. This is completely unrelated to Hindi or languages, but I have to mention one movie I've seen recently: Steve McQueen’s Shame (2011). It’s (at least on the surface) a character study of a man with a sex addiction (excellently played by Michael Fassbender). I wouldn’t put it on the same level as McQueen’s brilliant previous film Hunger (2008), but it was one of those movies which reminds me why I love film. Ancient Greek has been going pretty well although if I don’t pick up the pace things are going to change! My class is only on Tuesday and Thursday; every Tuesday is a vocabulary quiz and every Thursday is a grammar quiz (which of course involves knowing vocabulary as well). I’ve done very well on past quizzes, but as more and more vocabulary is being piled on, I’m realizing I need to study a lot more. I make flashcards for most words in our textbook – I go from Greek to English which is something I would never do with another language like Hindi, but in this case it works just fine. My impressions of the language? Well, it’s interesting in certain ways since this is the first dead language I’ve ever studied. The script is still pleasing to me, but I would say it’s the grammar which is of most interest. I like how regardless of word order, you can figure out the meaning of a sentence. Similarly, the importance of endings is new to me. My classmates and even my professor tend to use some Modern Greek pronunciations, but this usually only extends to sounds like “f” instead of aspirated p and “th” as in “thick” instead of aspirated t. Sometimes I’ll pronounce them that way in class, but usually I pronounce them otherwise for the sake of “purity”… I don’t love this language nor do I feel that strongly about it, but I am enjoying dabbling in it this semester and, as expected, this particular professor makes it fun and teaches it well. I’ll have to wait and see as to whether or not I’ll take the 102 course next semester. All of my required classes will be done so I should have time, but there’s one language I’m excited about starting seriously at some point. For what I believe is the first time, a Sanskrit class will be available next semester, but for a few reasons I will most definitely stay away from it! Sanskrit can remain at the top of my list of "languages that scare me" - right alongside Tamil and Malayalam.
