Assuming I understand correctly (and I have to confess my weak German is only getting weaker
as I'm neglecting it terribly) - is the problem for displaying Japanese characters in your
browser because of the encoding? There are a few options for Japanese, and for some reason
the default your browser uses doesn't always render correctly.

encoding! That's it. It's happening more often than it used to -- and now German is affected. Some days it's really hard to read the forum and I have to leave and come back later when my computer is feeling better.

It's really depressing. If you have any tips for how I can tweak my browser settings to guarantee proper display of characters, please let me know :)

I use Firefox for almost everything and have the encoding set up to default to UTF-8 which seems to cover most situations. If it doesn't, I just have to change it manually for the page until I find one that works!

Okay, I'll have to look into that! Right now things seem to be running okay. g-bod, your log title is looking normal again ;) No question marks or little squares in there...

Today I'm using a new "task" app to get myself to study more. I've made "tasks" out of getting through my Assmil and Japanese kanji decks (anki). I get points for checking off each task. My smartphone gives me a loud "gong" (sounds like the emperor emerging) when it's time for me to study. Cute idea. I hope it works!

My next step is to look for an anki-app. But that will have to wait. I have to go study my German materials.

I've got my anki-app but I need more Speicher to download my anki decks :( Amazon is taking their time getting me my SD-card.

I'm done with studying German today and I'm having fun with the "voice translator" app. I'm wondering if I can improve my reaction (I'm so slow to translate my thoughts) if I just walk around with the smartphone and speak English into it and get French. The audio quality of the app is quite good. I just tried it. the translation needs some modification. For "I have to take out my contact lenses" it gave me "Je dois prendre mes lentilles de contact." Not quite right. It took me about a minute of googling to get "retirer". I put in in Anki.

This could work for simple sentences that I can proof myself. Plus: instead of memorizing those Assimil dialogs, I can translate what I'm thinking. It might be a good way to refresh everything I've forgotten since I was sick these past two months. It's also a really good test to see if I should recommend thsi app to my clients, who are often on business trips and could really use a fast translator for some (or all) occassions.

So tomorrow will be "Voice Translator-app Research Day 1" :)

Gruesse
Paul
