FAQ-NL: Dutch
FAQ-NL is a thread where forum members can ask specific questions about learning the Dutch language. And I hope it will be a thread where our native Dutch and fluent Dutch forum members will offer answers to these questions.
I'd like to keep FAQ-NL fairly structured so it will be easy to find questions and answers. Try to ask only one question per post. For those who answer, please quote the first line of the question. If there is sufficient interest and activity, I will, from time to time, edit a summary version of FAQ-NL.

FAQ-NL: What is the best word for Miscellaneous?
In my computer file system, or other file systems, I often have a folder for Miscellaneous or usually Misc. What is the best Dutch equivalent? I see that the Van Dale dictionary translates miscellaneous by gemengd, verscheiden, gevarieerd, divers and allerlei. What do Dutch natives put on their Misc folders?

This is an example of how an answer to an FAQ-NL question should be formatted.

FAQ-NL: Pronunciation of weer?
According to standard Dutch pronunciation, "weer" should be pronounced something like "vare" in English. But if my ears don't deceive me, I mostly hear it on Dutch TV and radio like "veer" in English. Do my ears deceive me?

FAQ-NL: Dropping the "n" in "en"
I find one of the hardest things for me to master in Dutch pronunciation is the normal practice of dropping the "n" on words ending in "en", and there are so many. I understand that, strictly speaking, it should be pronounced, but few people do. Question: What is taught in school about this issue?

FAQ-NL: 2000 and 9?
I believe it is correct to say either "tweeduizendennegen" or "tweeduizendnegen". But I notice that NOS Journaal news from The Netherlands almost always uses "tweeduizendnegen" and Het Journaal news from Belgium almost always uses "tweeduizendennegen". Does that mean that the "en" is used much more frequently for these kinds of numbers in Belgium than in The Netherlands?

I would choose 'divers' or 'allerlei' for you folder. (allerlei sounds even better to me now) However I always choose 'overig' as a folder name.

/weːr/ is the correct pronunciation. It should not sound like the English 'veer'. I think your ears deceive you. And the 'w' should not sound like a 'v'!

The endings in -en should NOT be pronounced. If people do pronounce these n's it is wrong! In school I have been taught not to pronounce these. My teacher told me that it is totally wrong.
Here in Belgium we alway say 'tweeduizendennegen' while in Holland they say 'tweeduizendnegen'. I have never heard a Flemish person say 'tweeduizendnegen'. It is a part of the dialect. Yes, you are right about the fact that it is more used in Belgium than in The Netherlands.

The word "varia" is also good. This word is a Dutch word, I found it in the list of Dutch words. I myself use the
word "Allerlei" to put miscellaneous things.
