There may have been many similar threads, but I thought it could not hurt to start another little game. The rules are very simple:
We start with an original text, the next posting translates this text into a different language, and so on. Every posting translates from the language immediately above into any language of your choice. Languages can be chosen several times, just not from English into English, ahm, for example.
If you start with a cool sophisticated translation into Navajo be aware that you may be the only one who can continue the game, so don't rush - take your time :-)
It is fun only, so no need to be shy, but writing nonsense/google by purpose may make a continuation of the game unnecessarily hard, well, let's see.
I have chosen the beginning of a minor novel as a starting point, so that we can do no harm:
"Call me Ishmael. Some years ago - never mind how long precisely - having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation."
Your turn!

I'll have to talk to my development department. They had told me this game concept could not fail ...
Ok, my first move is from English into German, the only language I am fluently proficient in (well, not according to all the more demanding definitions here on this forum, but in my private rooms I feel proficient).
"Nennt mich Ismael.
This is your new point of reference, the next round goes from German into x. And please, don't call me Ishmael.

I'll risk another move, against the old rule to translate into one's native language only. It is really your fault, don't blame me!
"Ismaelum me appelles.
If you think it is not Ciceronian, I can always argue that I tried to capture the genuine atmosphere of the century our original text was written in. But you don't have to believe me ...
Next round: From Latin into any language, please. Your turn!

Llámame Ismael.
Hace algunos años - no importa cuántos - ,
Next round from this Spanish text into any language, corrections are welcome, of course. (No, don't send me any Franzen books, please ...)

I don't mean to be a spoil sport but based on my studies in Estonian of long ago, I have a strong suspicion that the Estonian version as posted by Cesare M. is courtesy Google Translate.
Just sayin'...

There is a certain similarity in other versions, too. It is not an important issue, and anybody could have jumped in with a Google translation, for the fun of it, and to see how good it is, but a little check gave the following (all translated from English to target language):
Cesare:
Google:

I did a short check of my own German version, just to see:
lingoleng:
"Nennt mich Ismael.
Google:
"Call me Ishmael Vor einigen Jahren -. "
I think my version is better ...not good, maybe, but better. What a relieve ...

I take it you haven't seen good old Cesare's youtube channel?
http://www.youtube.com/user/Chezrocksall
He has Aspergers. He claims to speak 39 languages "fluently" (almost none of which he actually speaks at more than a beginner's level).
