1 English - useful throughout the world;
2 Japanese - to get around using samurai clothes and talk to them in their native language. Japan is an awesome country, totally different from where I was born. They have all the manga stuff, even though I dislike it. You have a lot of cool things to do in Japan, this country has an interesting history and the girls are pretty. They are developers of many technologies. Beautiful place to know, it's the coolest and distinguished place that I want to travel (in my opinion, ok?);
3 Mandarin - to get around reading hanzi, to know the ancient temples, be able to write, etc;
4 Greek - I like Mythology very much;
5. German - useful in Europe.
As you can see, I didn't mention Spanish. My mother tongue is Portuguese, and I can understand Spanish pretty well. They are closer languages. I know that in this challenge you would not have a mother tongue, that makes me do not understand Spanish. But I still with my choices.

1. Spanish (I love travelling in Central and South America)
2. Russian (I love Slavic languages so I suppose I'd choose the most useful one)
3. Indonesian (I love jungle, remoteness, islands)
4. Inuktitut (I would relish the opportunity to learn the Eskimo way of life with the Eskimos themselves)
5. Basque (I've always had a fascination with the Basque language and country)

English
French
Spanish
Russian
Mandarin
That was easy. Though I suppose it would depend on what kind of traveling you're doing. Depending on the trip, maybe your best combination is Greek/Turkish/Bulgarian/Romanian/Serbo-Croatian or Hindi/Bengali/Kannada/Tamil/Malayalam.

I'll start with French. Just think of the Caribbean and South Pacific islands with beautiful beaches where French is spoken.
Arabic provides an opening to Egypt.
English is perhaps the most common second language in the world, and many people in the tourist industry use it.
There seem to be plenty of Japanese tourists around the world. Japanese wouldn't just be useful in Japan, but it would also help me to communicate with the people I would meet on trains and in hostels.
German would be useful for many of the same reasons as Japanese.
