I saw someone else give themself an extension and I feel like I want to do that also. I lost several months throughout the year not studying regularly, thus, I hereby grant myself 3 months extra time before I evaluate my language-learning with respect to my TAC goals. Update for last night: Turkish I'm not sure how the "sentence-method" works, everything seems to indicate that you shouldn't use a translation. I could do that for Spanish, maybe, but not Turkish. Anyway, last night I spent time gathering Turkish sentences and their translations and entering them Mnemosyne. I've decided that I feel comfortable enough to move on from Unit 53, meaning all that is left two relatively short review units. One covers voseo (Unit 54) which I have pretty much figured out now (at least the Argentinian variety) after speaking with a few kids from Argentina online, and the other, suffixes. I'm excited to finally be nearing the end! French: I've been doing a lot of vocabulary work the past couple days. Mnemosyne now has 845 French cards, and I have another sheet and a half (about 150 words) on wordlists that I haven't entered yet so as not to mass up an overwhelming amount of reviews. I'm finding right now that it's a lot easier to remember French words than it was for Spanish. I should also find something to read because I don't want my grammar to slip too much. Turkish: Nothing yet, the rest of the day is scheduled for Turkish. Reading through different pages on turkishturkish.net (serdaruçar's site) and trying to find a good source of Turkish sentences that I can either understand or have English translations to help me :D 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Today I ended up spending more time reviewing my wordlists than adding new stuff and taking a bit of a break. I started to watch the Turkish movie Sis ve Gece, but I felt a bit sick today and it was too difficult to focus on, so I ended up watching the movie Amen. dubbed in Spanish. Spanish: Today I started Unit 54. I went through it twice, as this unit is much shorter than last few (about an hour, if you don't pause). I'd say I spent about 3 hours going through it twice. Hopefully I'll be able to go through it twice tomorrow, and three times the following day. This is one of those frustrating units where you have to sort of guess a lot until you memorize what they want you to say. For example: Question: A mí me gusta ir a la playa. Response: 1. A mí también. 2. Y a mí también. 3. A mí no. 4. A mí tampoco. But another question goes like this: A mí me gusta almorzar ahí. Response: 1. A mí también. 2. A mí no. 3. A mí sí. 4. A mí también. Until you either figure out a pattern or memorize the responses, it's just frustrating. Another thing was the comparison between cuanto, mientras, and entre. "Cuanto más gano más gasto"/"Mientras más gano más gasto"/"Entre más gano más gasto" - The more I earn the more I spend. In the exercises they seemed to pick one at random. Also, I've seen "cuanto más" and "mientras más" but never "entre más", which doesn't really mean much, just that I had to check the pdf to make sure I was hearing it correctly (entre más didn't seem to make much sense). Oh, and using the vos forms would make the grammar much simpler. I also like the shift in stress that the vos/vosotros forms have. They have a nice ring to them, it's like a little verbal gift to your friends everytime you speak to them :D Now I just wish vos had special forms for ti/te (¡A vos hay que ponerte anteojos!). I don't see myself needing an active command over the vos forms anytime soon, so this unit isn't all that essential for me, but it is fun (apart from everything I complained about earlier :P). French: I did my Mnemosyne reviews and added another 50 words from a wordlist I made a couple days ago. I also reviewed the wordlist I made yesterday and another sheet from a few weeks ago. There was also an incredible website that someone showed me that I was looking for today. It had a huge list of grammar topics (and other things) and explanations/exercises for each. I couldn't find it, but I really do need to review my French grammar and try to actually start using it with someone. Turkish: I reviewed the wordlist I made yesterday (half a sheet) and did my Mnemosyne reviews. I wanted to fill out the other side of the sheet but now I am too tired to concentrate on it. I also looked around Serdar's site some more. I'm starting to get a feel for the language and I think I'm going to start looking around to see how the other tenses are formed. I want to start reading some short news articles on BBC Türkçe. Also, I wanted to talk about the -li suffix to see if I understand it. I know it is often used with countries/cities to give a nationality: Amerika -> Amerikalı (lı to match the vowel harmony of 'a'), Kanada -> Kanadalı (lı again), Çin -> Çinli, etc. But... it's also used for something that contains it? salamlı - containing salami şekerli - with (containing) milk I just don't want to get it mixed up with the -le/-la suffix, like: Çayı süt ile içiyorum - I'm drinking tea with milk. Is that different than "Çayı sütlü içiyorum"? Perhaps the first means you're drinking both a cup of tea and a glass of milk? Yesterday I found an article on the past tense:
I went to the verbix site and conjugated a couple verbs, and I can't believe how many tenses there are! Present: continuous (-iyor-) aorist (-ir-/-er-) Past: definite (-d-) progressive dubative (-iyormuş-) past aorist (-ermiş-) progressive narrative (-iyord-) perfect narrative (-mişt-) doubtful distant past (-mişmiş-) past conditional narrative (-seyd-) past conditional dubitative (-seymiş-) and on and on! I have no idea what most of these are used for, but at least it seems that all you really need to do is learn the stem as the endings don't really change. Looking through them all, it seems to me like there there are two sets of endings (suffixes), which really only differ in the third person singular and first person plural. Stems ending in d or t as well as the conditional forms use one, and everything else uses the other: seviyoruz - we are loving severiz - we love both have the -iz suffix (seviyoruz adjusted for vowel harmony) sevdik - we loved/we have loved seviyorduk - we were loving (this is just a guess I haven't studied this tense yet) both use the -ik suffix (and end in a 'd' or a 't'). I hope I haven't made too many huge errors here. I am also wondering how long it will take me to get all this under my belt! I think one of Iversen's grammar summary sheets would work really well for Turkish verbs, as they are very regular. Then I could start reading small news articles and look up new tenses (and suffixes) as I come across them. EDIT: Ok, whew. I just finished making a huge reference sheet with a lot of verb tense stems. When I started this post, I had just finished reviewing one of my French wordlists.
