That's it then, I'm starting the Dutch course next year. The test I took was so trivial I
can't imagine possibly having failed it.

In other news I've become a little disillusioned with my French reading and I've jumped
across to Spanish. Which is a strange experience. I feel like I'm listening to Italian,
yet the words are all different, yet I still have a near perfect concept of the grammar
which is basically identical.

Brace yourselves, for I have just found out about Lingua Latina. Just based on the few
sample pages available online it looks really interesting. I don't see myself
really studing latin, but with this integrated and graded approach I wonder if it'd be
possible to read it a bit like a novel.

Just the idea that someone would write such a book is so awesome, bringing it all to
life.

numerodix, I just came across your initial Italian log. It is very interesting. I wanted
to congratulate you on your success!

I am on around day 19 of Assimil :) I found one insightful line of your log was saying
that you went back to Assimil, but none of the things were really new and that you had
taken a different path to the same spot. It is cool and reassuring for many, I think, to
know that many paths can get them where they want to be! I hope your studies are going
well.

For anyone interested I posted a summary of my language activities over the past 2.5
years, ever since I started learning Italian here on HTLAL.

Summary

2.5 years is a good amount of time, yet not that long in language learning terms. Still,
in this period I've enriched my life enormously by including these new languages into my
life.

Congratulations on all your progress with Italian, numerodix! I like the way you write
about independent language learning. I have the same problem of getting stuck sometimes
but at the same time, getting to choose my own materials and slapping it all together
however I want is exactly what I love most about learning languages on my own. It makes
my achievements all the more satisfying to think that I did it all myself.

That's one thing (the making your own program), but equally important imo is that
there's noone setting goals for you. There is no "after year 3 you will have completed
the textbook Ciao, straniero 3". Noone is deciding what is possible to achieve and the
result is that you can achieve far more than you thought was possible.

beter.

So I'm on a total opportunistic quest now, apparently. It's fun to stretch myself :)

Finished my first Portuguese book this week, was quite doable. I'm very poor at listening
though, so I have an audiobook lined up as well.

Later this year I'm considering trying Catalan, German and Latin (using Lingua Latina).
No real plan, just "would be cool". Every time I think to myself a certain language is "a
bridge too far" and "not my cup of tea" I seem to reconsider a few months later.

This brings my total of languages I can read in to 11:

1    Afrikaans
4    Dansk
133  English
2    Español
18   Français
88   Italiano
30   Nederlands
15   Norsk
29   Polski
1    Português
5    Svenska

A new idea I had. My first 4-way story. Not very good, but okay for a first try.

- Bonjour, monsieur. Qu’est-ce que vous voulez manger?

- Bom dia.

- No no no, Roberto, fais pas ça!

- No, ça c’est pire encore!

- Guys, what the hell are you talking about?? I don’t understand a damn word of what you’re saying.

If you spot errors, please say. :)
