I haven't followed this discussion completely, but the real danger a
language faces is when it is only a second language. People aren't going
to suddenly stop speaking the language they learned at birth, but can
easily switch the language they learn at school (Ex: Russian today
compared to 20 years ago). Unfortunately French is losing much of its
ground in this arena, but using the same logic, it could always spread
again quickly if circumstances change.
