I used to drive around two and a half hours to work and two and a half hours back everyday, most of the
time listening to Pimsleur's Mandarin Chinese right before I was assigned to China a year ago. Though I
may have picked up some Mandarin this way, what I learned in all those many, many agonizing hours in
traffic couldn't compare to the short study periods I now spend studying the exact same Pinsleur's lessons
in my quiet study room overlooking an opera house and the Yangtze river. There is no substitute for focus.
"Driving two and a half hours to work!?!" You may ask, by the way. Let's just put together the words: Metro
Manila and rush hour.
Gladly, my office now less than ten minute from where I live.
