Except the word "gay" being used to mean "stupid" or whatever people use it for is because of people's homophobia. Try and justify your homophobia all you want, but it's still offensive.

I have to ask:

Were you really offended by the use of that word, or are you just registering your disapproval because you feel you ought to?
You may be unaware but here in the U.K one can quite easily be accused of racism for displaying our national flag. It was hijacked you see. I see this happening with the English language also, and this has been a fine example. At least it allows for language growth though with all the neologisms that get dreamed up for people to fall foul of.

Parasitus, I don't understand what you're trying to say here. Is it that the word "gay" has two separate meanings,
both "homosexual" and "lame"? I'm not an expert in linguistics by any means, but the reason why it means lame is
because acting "gay" is seen as uncool. Your example of "miss" isn't relevant to the situation because the term for a
young woman did not suggest the term for a longing of any kind, whereas the link between gay and lame come
from the same source, that (largely) boys breaking the gender roles of masculinity are labelled as. You seem to
think they somehow evolved side by side as two completely different words, which they did not.

As for HMS, you try hearing a derogatory word that refers to yourself for the umpteenth time in your life and see
how it grates on your nerves before you accuse anyone of "actively seeking to be offended". I don't want your
sympathy; I want you to stop using the word gay as an insult. This really isn't some kind of draconian Orwellesque
Thought Police type attack on liberty. It's common human decency.

Actually, in England anyway, the term "gay" if used as a perjorative simply means acting homosexual - not lame or whatever other insult you try to attribute to it.
Being called "gay" would be offensive to a heterosexual perhaps - if they felt strongly enough. I fail to see how a homosexual could be offended by being described as...homosexual.
You advocate the use of "lame" and see it as an insult I take it? Have you considered how a person with a serious leg disability could take that?

Yes, I am offended by it, because my grandpa is gay and has a partner, my sister is bisexual, and I myself... I'm mostly straight, but I'm not sure. And yes, I am telling the complete truth.

HMS, here in America, many youth in schools use the word "gay" as an (attempted) insult towards other people. For example, someone is talking about how their teacher gave them more homework to do, a typical student would say "that's gay", meaning that they think giving students more homework is a stupid (and unfair) thing to do. You should be very well aware that there are vocabulary differences between the USA and UK, especially in slang.

Then you are offended for no reason. Do you really think the comment you claim to be offended with was suggesting the teaching methods were "homosexual"?

Do you think the term "cheesy" can only refer to something smelling of cheese or being cheese-like?

Stop getting all outraged for no reason. Idioms take on many forms. I maintain you are affecting offence.

There are however insulting terms for homosexuality in England. Have you heard of "mince"? Verb. To mince is to walk in an overly homosexual manner. Quite ludicrous really, probably based on a few observations. Back to the usage of "lame"... Downs syndrome children used to be referred to as Mongol children as they were said to have mongoloid characteristics. Hence the insult "mong" used to describe...an idiot. Have you ever described somebody as "lame" - in the perjorative sense? See what I'm getting at?

Have you been reading any other posts at all? 3 different people described why using "gay" with that meaning is offending, because it's use as an insult is from homophobic people. You do know what homophobic means right?

And I said that about "cheese" because parasite wrote "cheese" when he meant to write "cheesy".

I have never heard "mince" (except like cutting up vegetables and stuff) nor "mong", and I never have even thought of the word "lame" as an insult, that's what someone else used to describe it.

What the hell wrong with you? I don't see why it's OK to hate someone because of the way they were born. Like I've already said, there is no way you can justify homophobia.

Read what Whitefish said, since you obviously didn't:

I have indeed read the other posts. Just because three people said one thing it does not make it right.
Why are you so keen to play the homophobic card? What gives you the right to label people as hating homosexuals based on the use of one word with many different connotations, with you choosing to only acknowledge the most offensive one was intended in that instance.
