I don't really think there is a right answer...if you are equally interested in both, then I would suggest you make your decision based on the amount of learning material available...Sorry if that wasn't much help...Good luck with whichever you choose!

I am biased and I won't pretend not to be but Lithuanian is cooler. :)
Plus you can use my course for some basics whereas I don't know of anything usable on the net to learn the basics of Latvian. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I tend more toward Lituanian because it is said to have conserved more ancient features. In etymologies the Lituanian language always pops up besides such giants as Sanskrit or Ancient Greek.

I know some one who learnt Latvian while her sister learnt Lithuanian. It seems that
although the languages are closely related, Lithuanian is noticeably more difficult... up to you if you want to get the basics through Latvian then pick up the finer points of Lithuanian or go for broke with Lithuanian from the beginning. Since I know nothing about Latvian, my vote goes to Lithuanian, it's a very interesting language. A few years ago, I had a Lithuanian friend, so the most logical thing to do back then was trying to learn a little bit of her language. The main problem was I couldn't find many resources online, but there were some basic courses to start with, and if I recall correctly there was one site which sent to my email "the Lithuanian word of the day". And from that, it evolved into something better so I started to receive phrases, whole noun declinations and verb conjugations. Take care!!!
