MY goal for 2010 is to reach a basic fluency. Very simply really. I have several targets or goals. In February I'm doing the B1 Delf test. I plan to also do the B2 level and if I'm ambitious I will try to do the C1 test late in the year. In April I will be spending one or two months in an intensive language school in France. If all goes well I will find employment in a job where I have to speak French. I have to decide where I'd like to go. Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, I've heard there's a good school in Tours. Who knows? My immediate goal is to pass the B1 test in flying colours. I plan to find a tutor in addition to the classes I'm doing. I have a textbook for the test which I plan to complete. I have to focus on learning how to write and my speaking. Last year I focused on Listening-Reading as my principal method of study. I might slow down a little on this because I want to learn to speak like a real person. L-Rs great but I'll do it for pleasure. At the moment my resources are at a low. I've finished Michel Thomas, Pimsleur and Learn in your car french a long time ago. I've worked my way through all the Learn French by Podcast lessons. I'm going to go through Fluent French Audio one additional time. It's a fantastic resource but I only tracked down 6 issues. So I have to get some resources ready. What I'm looking for. A new podcast? A new audio course for more advanced learning, Pimsleur 4 or Michel Thomas very advanced if you will. Just watched my first episode of Tout Le Monde Veut Prendre Sa Place on the internet. This is going to be a great resource for me throughout the year. Thankyou to my team mate Liam for pointing out that it's avaliable each day on the web here. It's supposed to be a gameshow but it's more of a chance for people to have a chat. I counted 10 questions in the first 30 minutes. The presenter is very very funny and hosts also 'don't forget the lyrics' (n'oubliez pas les paroles?).
I spent an hour on skype talking in French last night. Made some very fundamental mistakes in the effort to try to get out what I was trying to say. But.. did not need to resort to English for duration of call. I'm trying to collect some resources for the new year. I'm downloading L'Assommoir by Zola from here. I may also try to track down an audiobook for Harry Potter. So for the month of January my resources will be a follows. DELF B1 text book Anki Tout Le Monde Veut Prendre Sa Place Revising Fluent French Audio Listening Reading L'Assommoir The occasional film Skype conversations I don't want to spread my resources too thin because I have a test in early February and I have to learn to spell before then especially when conjugating verbs! I want to finish my textbook completely before I sit the exam. Glad you like the show. Nagui also hosts a third show called Taratata http:///www.mytaratata.com/ . It has a similar format to Jules Holland. It's not as good a learning tool as his other two shows but the website is amazing with videos, bio's and albums of all the artists (both French and international) who have appeared on the show.

Thanks for that recommendation. It looks like a great show. It will be a good introduction to new French music for me. I tried very briefly to watch somes videos but could not get it to work. I'll try again later. (oh wait I just got it to work). Well now I've really got my French Tele sorted with Tout le Monde Veut Prendre Sa Place and My Taratata. What two fantastic resources. I've been watching Tout Le Monde Veut Prendre Sa Place religiously since I learned it was available on the internet. Each episode is 40 minutes and I've seen 3 now. In addition to the hard work of watching tele I've worked on some written composistions in preperation for my test coming up. I'm gonna have to do a load of work with spelling especially when conjugating verbs and when writing accents. I must also get a better handle of common words that appear especially in written composition. Such words as 'ainsi' and 'aupres' which are likely to appear in a formal document such as applying for a job. There's countless important words and combinations of words which continue to baffle me. So the only way is to knuckle down and make myself understand and see them in different context. Spent another hour on a skype call. Very satisfied with how this component of my study is going as I know that the oral section is an important part of the exam. And because it's the beginning of the year I'm spending far too much time collecting resources which I plan to use at some point. I've downloaded The Potrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and I may omit the reading side all together when I tackle this audio book. So I may just listen in French and see how I go. I have the advantage of having read the book before. I've also aquired series 8 of South Park in French but this may have to wait till I've finished my exam. I've commenced Listening-Reading L'Assommoir by Zola and I'm an hour into the audiobook As usual spending about 20-30 minutes with Anki each day. Although all of the above may look like I've spent a lot of time studying I've actually just touched on a little of everything without doing any real study. But spare time is at a premium at the moment. When will the holiday season end?! Thats it for now. I'm looking foward to going back to class tomorrow after the holiday season. So tommorrow and the following morning I'm looking after a friends house and dog. I think the dog should be a good language partner. But really it will be a good chance to sit down and do some 'proper' work for once. So I'll bring my backpack filled with textbooks, a dictionary and a notebook and get down to doing the stuff I've neglected until now. Without the computer and the usual distractions it will be a perfect enviroment.
What I hope to do is to work on my spelling especially when conjugating verbs in the various tenses. I want to learn the irregular verbs such as aller and etre in all the tenses. I will work on the -er verbs which are the majority in the French language. Plus I will work on the other groups of such the -re verbs like attendre, -rir verbs like ouvrir, verbs like connaitre and savoir. Hopefully I will be able to branch them off into their groups and have a long list of verbs for each group. I want to be able to recognise a verb and know which group it belongs to and afterwards how to spell and use it properly in all tenses. What I really need is one of those 501 most useful verb books to help me out. For my studies I've seen another 3 episodes of Tout Le Monde Veut Prendre Sa Place which is a real pleasure to watch. I squeeze in about 30 minutes of listening reading each night before going to bed. I had another hour long phone call with my mother on Skype who is a native French speaker. It didn't go especially well because I was tired and not prepared to speak in French. I attended two Classes at the alliance Francaise and we worked on 'exprimer un jugement' and 'faire une recommandation/mettre en garde'. The teacher gave us an extremely useful page on expressing advice, a reproach, expressing regret and terms of articulation. It's really a very handy paper to have and I will have it ironed, pressed and lamintated soon. Hey writing mainly to recommend to you a great resource for you French learners. I spent a couple of hours with a pen and paper trying to decipher how to be able to spell French verbs when conjugated in the various tenses in preperation for my exam less then a month away. I wasted a lot of time and paper doing that. So I was getting all frustrated thinking about HOW I was going to spell until I found this site(Site is also for Italian, Spanish, Portugese and German). It lets you test your knowledge of verbs (regular and irregular) in all the tenses. I don't think i'll be using the plus-que-parfait in the subjonctif any time soon but it shows you the depth of this site that this option is available. I'm going to begin to work on the regular verbs in the present tense and work my way upwards. I hope to spend 30 minutes each day with this site up until my exam. I'll work on conjugating the regular verbs especially the -er verbs as they're more then 80% of the verbs in French.
Just asked myself today why have I picked another Zola book to Listen-Read. I must pick up some lighter reading the next time. Perhaps join the Harry Potter club. Oh the shame... Had another hour conversation on Skype. I am preparing some responses to questions that I may be asked during the oral section of the exam. There are 3 parts to the oral section. The first part you can very easily prepare because you are talking about/presenting yourself. Some of the questions you can expect to be are: -Comment vous appelez-vous? -Parlez de vous? -D'ou venez-vous? -Quels sont vos loisirs? -Que faites-vous pendant les vacances? -Quel est votre metier? -Est-ce que vous aimez votre travail? -Qu'aimeriez-vous faire plus tard? -Quels sont vos souhaits les plus chers? Hey all! The previous week was marked with two days of intensive study and a few days of little or no study. I had a day off today and last Wednesday with which I worked on predominately grammar and text book study. My exam is less two weeks away and I'm learning some very basic things which I have neglected till now.
I'm using this site which I mentioned in a previous post and I've found this site which works well as well. Both of these sites are to improve spelling when conjugating verbs. I'm still learning some very simple things like with verbs that have the auxillary etre in the past tense you have to change the past tense verbs accordingly. This does not go for verbs which use avoir as the auxillary. J'ai fait Elles ont fait but Je suis alle Elles sont allees I try to work with these verb conjugating sites in half hour time slots. There has been a vast vast improvement in just a little time. I had little or no spelling ability in French before but with just a little practice i'm coming along fine. I do 100 repitions on this site and mark my percentage, originally I was at 70% but now I am at 85% when doing a hundred repitions and it may be simply an accent missing with which I get the wrong response. I had two worthwhile and truly eye opening classes when it came to two particular elements of grammer which I have not properly dealt with yet. To say that I have a full grasp and knowledge of what I learned is not true, it has helped me to understand just that little bit more however. We worked on les pronoms interrogatifs et relatifs. For example lequel, lesquelle, auquel, a laquelle, auxquelles etc.etc. We also worked on the words like le mien, le tien, le sien, la notre, les leurs etc.etc. In theory I have understood these elements of grammer but I know it is with constant practice I will learn to understand them and one day use them myself orally. I have worked a lot on my DELF book in preperation for the DELF B1 test. The book is broken down into 4 sections like the exam. There is section for listenting and usually responding to multiple choice questions or simple justifications. There is the section for reading in which you take information from usually a magazine, article, newspaper, website and respond to the questions. There is the written section in which there is a small scenario presented and you must write a small response of 160-180 words usually in the form of a letter to a friend, a job application, an email, a posting on a forum etc. The last section is the oral section and my text book gives you advice and likely scenarios that may be presented in the oral section. The oral section of the DELF B1 is the one likely to give anyone the most nerves. I spoke a little about the first part of the oral test in a previous post. Its about 3 minutes of the examiner asking questions about you. I have prepared and printed my responses to questions that are likely to be asked by the examiner. This leaves two more parts of the oral exam. The second part is a role play with you and the examiner, it lasts about 5 minutes. A common example of a roleplay is you are driving in France and a policeman pulls you over but you don't have your licence. You can play the dumb tourist, you can act very very sorry, you can bribe, you can act angry etc.etc. This section makes me weak at the knees. The third part of the oral exam is you are given a poster, an advertisement etc, and you have to have an extended monologue of the theme of the poster. Sometimes the theme is clear sometimes its not. Its apparent that I have to work on speaking and I'm using Skype calls with my mother to work on this.
