Discussing the childhood of tennis players seems a little off-topic. ;p
I would definitely recommend my strategy to people learning languages, and I already do. I'm very happy with what I've learned with regards to the amount of work I've put into it. Start out with Assimil, read native materials with a dictionary as soon as you can find them, perhaps SRS a bit and see if it helps. L-R a LOT. Ok thanks, it is a bit like the Powell Alexander Janulus stuff I know about Thanks again. The main criticism of this method is that found in the loom of language: Can an adult really learn a language like a child? I don't really think so. Some immigrants learn their new language entirely through immersion - the main difference with children seems to be that the level of competence reached in this fashion varies greatly from individual to individual. Here is one success story from this forum, although it was more of a "graded immersion" than the more normal kind, when there is hardly any help available. Learning a language from scratch as an adult by "passive immersion", sitting in front of TV, is more experimental than active immersion, so it is understandable if someone doesn't feel ready to recommend it.
