I have some questions about the "R" sound as well. I've heard that Russian and Portugese sometimes replace the alveolar trill (Spanish R) with the uvular trill (gutteral/French R) and I'm wondering if that is really true.

Now, I've also heard many times that Russians are generally patient with amateurs and that Brazillians are as well so maybe the sound isn't quite as important in those countries as it is in other places. I've never travelled to either country though, so I don't have first hand experience.

I'll admit that the second most important reason for my not wanting to study Italian someday is that "dreaded rolled R," so I'd like to know what I'm getting myself into before I get into it. ;)

Never heard Russian nor Ukrainian immigrants here do that. But my experience is limited to a few tens of people.
