Well, I went to the lyceum that belongs to Moscow State Linguistics University and studied Latin for 3 years with a focus on grammar. We also always learned proverbs etc. I graduated and entered MSLU itself but it was a huge disappointment - except for Latin. We had a very, very strict prof with a fundamental knowledge of the Indo-European languages... Everyone was nearly scared of her but she was awesome! I managed to impress her by my vocabulary - I knew very little so I decided to SRS all lessons... I didn't tell her though, looking back now I almost regret it.
In the middle of that year I started Portuguese, and since then the modern Romance languages have been more interesting for me. So for example I'm not at the level of many others who claim basic fluency in Latin. I can't talk in it and I don't know any modern vocabulary so my production is very limited. I just decided that for a dead language the criteria for basic fluency can be different. And I don't read original works in Latin either... It has been very important in my acquisition of its descendants, though, and I still always check the etymology when looking up words. I guess I'm just more interested in Vulgar Latin now. The changes are fascinating to follow, even if I sometimes look down upon them, especially in Spanish. The verb system was so gorgeous *sigh*, what have they done with it... also some sound changes make me pout and things like "a mi me gusta" sound downright uneducated to me - it helps to think of the countless people who WERE criticized for saying things like this before it became standard. Apart from that epic textbook, I also tried some podcasts and a translation of several chapters of LOTR:) And I always tried to add the related words from Esperanto and/or Portuguese to my Latin flash cards, this also helped. I am already in the Balto-Slavic/Finno-Ugric team, but I am also learning Italian and would like to join this team too if it's not too large.

Which languages? Italian, Spanish and Polish, then? So many Polish learners wow. I think I definitely will give in at some point and study Polish... most likely around Euro 2012 :) oh God I got a crazy idea. I'll do the 6 week challenge in August in the language of the country that wins Euro 2012. Unless it's Russia, England or France - then the runner-up's language:) And maybe Polish for the May 6WC then. also the runner-up for August if they win. Yes, I know I will continue with Italian and Spanish and then I will give Polish another chance, maybe for one of the 6 week challenges. I dabbled with Polish last spring but got frustrated when I realized just how awful my pronunciation was and then decided to stop. That's neat that you translated several chapters of LOTR. That is my favorite ever book, but unfortunately I don't own a Latin copy! I agree that Spanish words help me to remember their Latin counterparts (or ancestors). That is one bonus of learning related languages! :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
