Thanks for the feedback! Yes, consistent hard work is the real "secret" at the end of
the day - it seems that people often don't like to admit this so they make excuses about people either having some sort of natural talent and ability or some secret that lets them succeed without all the work. I also think that I have a tendency to understate the amount of hard work I've done out of not wanting to appear nerdy or whatever by admitting that I often spend over an hour a day on learning languages, which I guess just adds to the misconceptions and probably isn't a good thing overall as I should be proud of doing what I love and all that... I went to the Language Café last night, and this time it was certainly more miss than hit in terms of language practice. There were a few French speakers but again it was older people who I didn't have much in common with and so I had little to contribute to the conversation. So I joined the English/Spanish section which is always animated and full of interesting people and I had a good chat with them. I have to admit that I'm a bit jealous of Spanish learners because it seems like they have almost unlimited opportunity to practice with native speakers who are numerous, keen to help, and always up for having some fun. Ah well, if I keep up the good work with Italian and French then I might be able to start Spanish before the end of this year. I have a perhaps somewhat romanticised idea that learning Spanish is basically just going to be an epic party... It probably would have been more productive for me to leave and go to the Italian meetup instead as I said I might, but I was enjoying myself and meeting some cool people, and in my social life I tend to follow the rule that if there's two things on and I'm enjoying myself at one then I should just stay there rather than going to the other, as when I've done otherwise I've almost always been disappointed and wished I had stayed at the first. And like I keep saying, any time spent socialising and meeting new people is time spent productively for me, and who knows, maybe karma will reward me in due time for helping people with their English. Quick update for this week...
Français Wednesday Meetup (which was good despite few actual French people being there), and two Skype chats. I may have found another Skype partner who is from near Paris and likes the same sort of music as me, but we'll see whether that actually goes anywhere, since as we all know well most language exchanges just don't. I recorded a small segment of one of my Skype conversations to assess my pronunciation, then re-recorded a couple of the sentences afterwards in order to compare my spontaneous speech to my "practising" speech. MASSIVE difference; the re-recordings were a hell of a lot clearer, more articulate, and, well, more French-sounding. It could've as well been a different person. So it seems that now I can speak well, but I just don't always actually do it when I'm conversing, so I still need to work on developing the good habits when I speak to people. For what it's worth, I think my speaking was a lot better at the meetup (and I think it often is better in face-to-face than over Skype) but I don't have the recordings to prove it... time to get one of these discreet spy microphones for educational purposes maybe? :) I also believe that I had a conversation in French with a Spanish girl on Saturday night after finding out that she spoke French, but to be honest I don't remember it very well. One month until I go to France. To be honest there's no way I can see myself being actually fluent by then, but I can do my best. I'm still finding it to be a case of the closer I think I'm getting, the further away I realise I actually am. Italian Super Challenge Films: 4 done, 96 to go. Speaking hours: 3 done, 97 to go. I watched another episode of Montalbano, a good film called Le Conseguenze dell'Amore, and some assorted TV. I checked out some of In Italia and Cantieri d'Italia (from the thread TID=32332&PN=1">Videos similar to FIA & Fokus Deutsch? but they seemed too basic and beginner-ish for me. I still like the Italiano in Famiglia episodes though, as it's more "natural" but has a full transcript. Speaking was just the usual solo stuff. I know I'm miles behind compared to some people who've already gotten through a whole load of films, but I'm sticking to keeping French as my focus. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I had an interesting night at the Language Café which made me think a lot. Unusually
there were quite a few French people there, including some young guys of around my age, and talking to them highlighted the weaknesses of my French and more significantly just how big a gap there is between intermediate and advanced, between typical language meetup conversation (even with native speakers) and "real" conversation between native speakers, and between being conversational and being fluent. I do also wonder how much of it was down to my ability and how much was psychological as I was pretty tired and I felt a bit nervous trying to keep up with them so I made mistakes that I wouldn't normally expect to make. Whatever the reason though, it seems that there's still a lot of things that I have difficulty expressing, and I've decided that for the moment it's best to stop actively studying Italian for now and really concentrate on French. As a few of us discussed on emk's log, once you get past B1 level it becomes a completely different ball game, and one that a lot of us including myself are still trying to figure out. Since I'm at about B1 in Italian now but still struggling to reach a truly advanced level in French, it makes a lot more sense to stick with French since I still have a lot to learn about the whole advanced learning thing, and it would be good to be able to apply what I learn to Italian in the future. I may also take a cue from his log and start writing in French more often, and generally do things that force me to think in the language more often. Italian wise I'll keep watching a bit of film and TV and conversing when I can, to try to maintain/consolidate/activate my existing knowledge, but no point in actively learning anything new. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Alors je me suis décidé d'écrire mon journal en français, du moins pour la plupart, à
partir de maintenant. J'ai déjà dit que je pense que l'écriture peut améliorer la compétence de s'exprimer, surtout parce qu'elle vous oblige de s'exprimer d'une façon précise et juste, et vous permet de passer du temps à réfléchir et chercher les mots et les expressions justes ; ça peut, à son tour, améliorer la précision et justesse avec lesquelles on parle. Du moins, j'espère ! S'il y a quelqu'un qui lit ce journal et qui ne comprend pas le français... tant pis :). Je veux aussi recommencer à écrire un « journal intime » en français pour écrire des sujets hors de mes études de langues. J'ai découvert qu'on peut trouver beaucoup de documentaires sur Youtube en cherchant « documentaire » ( ou bien ce mot dans la langue qu'on apprend, par exemple « documentario » en italien ). J'ai commencé à en regarder une au sujet de violences urbaines. Les documentaires ont une bonne mélange de langage claire et préparé du narrateur, et de conversations spontanées des interviews et des scènes prises sur le vif. Je ne sais toujours pas si un logiciel SRS du genre Anki peut avoir une place dans mes études. Je l'ai déjà essayé plusieurs fois mais à chaque fois j'ai fini par en avoir marre, surtout après avoir raté quelques jours, et j'ai préféré faire des choses « naturelles » tels la télé, les journaux, les conversations, etc.. Mais maintenant que j'ai un niveau plus haut et j'essaie d'apprendre des expressions qui ne se trouve pas dans toutes les conversations, je pense que si à chaque fois j'entendais une expression qui me semble utile, que ce soit à la télé, dans le journal, ou pendant une conversation, je l'enregistrais en SRS, et je passais seulement quelques minutes par jour à les réviser, ça pourrait m'aider à les apprendre, à les utiliser, et à m'en souvenir en conversation. J'ai vraiment l'impression d'oublier la plupart de ce que j'apprends, et il est encore vrai qu'il y a beaucoup de langage que je comprends mais je n'arrive pas à utiliser. Mon étude d'italien jusqu'ici m'a montré que avoir un peu de structure dans mes méthodes, et réviser et traduire les mêmes phrases plusieurs fois, m'aide vraiment à apprendre et surtout à retenir ce que j'apprends. Malheureusement je n'ai pas beaucoup fait la semaine dernière et je ne m'attends pas à avoir beaucoup de temps d'étudier cette semaine non plus. Samedi j'ai fait un concert avec mon groupe, donc on a dû se préparer pendant la semaine, et après le concert on a fait un peu trop la fête et j'ai alors gâché ma dimanche - je n'avais vraiment pas envie de travailler ! Et ce soir je vais voir un concert à une autre ville ; mercredi il y aura la rencontre française mais il y aura aussi la fête d'un ami qui quitte la ville, et en outre, il connaît plein de belles filles qui viennent de partout en Europe - autant j'adore le français, autant il faut accorder les priorités, je ne peux pas laisser passer une occasion comme ça ! Jeudi j'ai répétition jusqu'à vingt-trois heures, et il y aura encore de fêtes samedi et dimanche - on est vraiment en plein saison de fêtes. J'ai l'impression que presque tout le monde a son anniversaire en mai, y compris moi, et en plus la plupart de mes amis sont étudiants qui finissent bientôt leurs examens. Vendredi je vais peut-être passer une soirée calme chez moi et étudier un peu de français, ça sera raisonnable entre toutes les fêtes ! Hier soir j'ai encore eu le choix entre le Language Café et la rencontre italienne ; comme je me concentre actuellement sur le français, et j'avais déjà su que quelques personnes avaient l'intention d'aller au Language Café pour parler français, la décision m'a été facile. J'ai passé en effet une bonne soirée, j'ai parlé un peu avec une français, une belge, et un autre écossais qui est passionné de français, et puis j'ai eu une conversation super intéressante avec une canadienne ( anglophone qui parle français ). J'ai toujours dit que si on n'a pas d'occasion de parler aux vrais francophones, mieux vaut parler aux autres gens qui apprennent la langue que rien ; je suis toujours tout à fait d'accord, mais à mon niveau je pense que ça commence à être un peu restrictif et j’apprendrais beaucoup mieux en parlant avec des francophones, surtout vu les différences entre les « vrais » conversations et les conversations des groupes de conversation dont j'ai parlé récemment. Mais il faut s'en contenter. En fait c'est toujours mon problème, que je n'ai pas forcément les occasions ( et surtout le temps ) dont j'ai vraiment besoin, malgré les avoir beau cherché, alors je dois me contenter de ce qu'il y a. À vrai dire je m'inquiète un peu pour ma vacance en France, mais comme mon ami a dit hier soir, « si on n'a pas peur avant une aventure, ce n'est pas une aventure » ! Italiano Non ho fatto assolutamente niente per il mio Italiano la settimana scorsa, neppure il pochino che volevo fare per mantenere il mio livello. Ne sono un po' triste perché mi piace veramente la lingua et non voglio perdere la conoscenza che ho acquisita quest'anno, ma non ho semplicemente il tempo e non voglio deconcentrarmi del francese. Però, devo almeno fare qualcosa, così ho deciso di ascoltare un po' di radio o guardare un po' di televisione ogni mattina, e di scrivere qua o nel mio diario almeno una volta per settimana. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

J'avais raison de penser que je n'aurais pas beaucoup de temps libre... mais comme prévu je suis resté chez moi vendredi soir où j'ai vu un vieux film, « Touchez pas au grisbi », et j'ai étudié un peu. Le film était éprouvant avec l'argot des années cinquante et l'intrigue un peu compliquée ( du moins pour moi ; j'ai toujours du mal à suivre l'intrigue de ce genre de film ). Au week-end j'ai profité du bon temps - plein de soleil et pas un nuage - les beaux jours comme ça sont rares en Écosse ! Mais les deux jours, avant de sortir, j'ai parlé sur Skype. Les conversations se sont bien passées, pour la plupart je parlais de façon assez automatique et je pense que ma prononciation s'était améliorée, mais comme toujours mon niveau change d'un jour à l'autre. Pour apprendre plus d'expressions idiomatiques qui pourraient être utiles dans la conversation quotidienne et pour comprendre des différences entre la façon d'exprimer une idée en français et en anglais, sans parler de travailler un peu mon sens de l'humour, j'ai essayé de regarder Seinfeld avec des sous-titres français. Chaque fois que j'ai vu un une expression que je pouvais me voir utiliser, je l'ai mise dans Anki. J'ai aussi commencé de faire de même avec Vie de Merde. En outre je continue avec Using French. Je vais rater le Language Café ce soir, mais comme je l'ai déjà dit, il faut accorder les priorités et il y a une grande fête ce soir chez un ami, qui est évidemment étudiant car on est lundi aujourd'hui ! Italiano e Super Challenge È sempre difficile resistere all'Italiano... Ho visto due documentari (Italy, Love it or Leave it (http://tv.wired.it/entertainment/2012/05/09/emigrare-o- resistere-scoprilo-nel- documentario-italy-love-it-or-leave-it.html; malgrado il titolo, è in Italiano) e La vera storia della Marijuana. Il primo si tratta di due Italiani che pensano lasciare l'Italia e che fanno un giro di tutto il paese per vedere i buoni lati e i mali lati, e il secondo si tratta evidentemente della droga ed è una metà in Italiano e una metà in inglese (interviste, discorsi politici, ecc.) con sottotitoli Italiani. I due documentari non mi sono stati troppo difficili. Sabato, quando ero al parco per approfittare del sole, ho incontrato alcune ragazze italiane. E ovviamente non ho lasciato passare una occasione così, gli ho parlato in italiano! Sono state sorprese, gli Italiani sono sempre sorpresi di sentire uno straniero parlare la loro lingua. Spero di rivederle, le ho invitate alla mia festa fra due settimane... Films: 6 done, 94 to go. Speaking hours: 4 done, 96 to go. Je suis fatigué, je n'ai pas fait grand chose ce weekend, l'envie et la motivation de faire quelque chose d'utile étaient fugaces. Je crois que je suis épuisé après deux semaines de fêtes et de concerts, et en plus je commence à être stressé parce qu'il me reste encore tellement à faire pendant les semaines suivantes. Mais ça ne fait rien, car JE SERAI À PARIS DANS 2 SEMAINES ! J'ai enfin fait les réservations d'avion et de train, et j'attends la réponse pour rester dans une chambre d'un appartement bien sympa sur Airbnb. Sinon je pourrais rester dans un hostel, mais je préférerais un vrai appartement parisien avec des vrais parisiens, sans parler d'une chambre privée, une cuisine, et un lave-linge dont j'aurai sûrement besoin après le Hellfest. En plus ça vaudrait mieux pour pratiquer mon français que de partager une chambre avec d'autres touristes. La semaine dernière je n'ai pas eu beaucoup d'occasion de parler français, mais j'ai écouté beaucoup de radio, j'ai vu beaucoup de télé, et j'ai étudié mon Assimil. Le dimanche j'ai parlé sur Skype mais j'étais fatigué et ça ne m'aide pas. Pour rattraper j'irai au Language Café ce soir et au Meetup mercredi. Italiano Ho visto il film "Sotto falso nome". L'ho scelto solamente perché mi piace il compositore che ha fatto la colonna sonore (Ludovico Einaudi), et mi aspettavo una banale storia di amore, ma sono stato sorpreso - era una storia interessante con una tema di nascondere i segreti e "vivere nell'ombra", ed anche una rappresentazione di "maschio beta e maschio alfa". Non ho potuto trovare dei sottotitoli né in inglese né in Italiano (esistano dei sottotitoli inglese sul Internet ma sono quasi inutili), ma non è stato troppo difficile capire la maggior parte del dialogo, tranne qualche dialogo in polacco di cui no ho capito niente!
