Yes, I suppose that could be considered inflammatory, but frankly it's no worse than referring to someone as an annoying fly, no longer worthy of being swatted away or using over-the-top language such as "saying my current objective has made them cry themselves to sleep and they have lost all hope in language learning".

Benny, I happen to like your blog and think that it provides valuable information for a lot of people. There's a TON of travel blogs out there, but yours is the only one I'm aware of that focuses on language issues that a full-time traveller encounters. You focus on the social aspect and there's value in that.

My only issue, and I think it's the main issue a lot of other people have, is that you're using a CEFR level as a basis for something that just isn't going to happen in three months. Instead of changing that level definition to fit your own goal, I think everyone just wants you to refer to the proper B1 level that you're really talking about.

R.

I've argued with you before; it's like talking to a wall. You're cynical beyond repair about me and what I do,

I'm cynical about what you say. I have never questioned your individual achievements. I have never presumed to comment on your ability in any language.

The thing is that there's a big difference between being able to do something, and being able to instruct someone else on it. To take a fairly extreme example, almost everyone on this board is able to walk, but which of us would be able to teach an adult to walk again after an accident? That's the job of an occupational therapist.

What I see on your blog strikes me as superficial and only half the story. I started out trying to discuss things with you, to help you, me and your readers understand you better -- you were not interested. You fail to accept that there are important details below the surface -- you are only willing to discuss the superficial elements. But the superficial elements are self-evident, so there is nothing TO discuss. Who, then, is the wall?

Agreed. I find arguing with the same narrow minded people tiresome and a waste of time, and if they keep posting confrontational comments, I'll lose interest in this thread.

That seems slightly hypocritical to me -- calling people "narrow minded" then criticising them for posting "confrontational comments" in the same breath....

Instead of Benny interviewing a Chinese, maybe Glossika (Mike) can interview him in Mandarin after 3 months!

Hope he succeeds! Maybe his next mission is to learn Taiwanese!

sorry but this time Cainntear isn't the only one who thinks that way ("instead of changing that level definition to fit your own goal...")..

but it's ok. after all, that "I'm not claiming anything. I'm aiming" is fair enough. so, let's see what happens after that "do you speak English?"

"will he become fluent after three months? if at all, only by his own standards. so what?"

How about giving Benny what is given to rapists, murderers and child molesters: The benefit of the doubt. Would I be able to learn Mandarin to C1 in 3 months? Certainly not. Do I think it is feasible? I have no idea. Let's find out, shall we? If he succeeds we will all have gained valuable information. If he fails, you can say "I told you so". So basically you are in a win-win situation, and can afford to take things down a notch.

You're a professional blogger, but you claim you're not.

If you are just going to make up lies (I don't recall saying I'm NOT a professional blogger),

Now you're making it difficult for me to apologise, by accusing me of "making up" stuff when I simply failed to remember properly.

As it turns out (searching the forum archive), it wasn't that you claimed that you weren't a professional, it was that you claimed that Fi3M wasn't a professional brand.
To me, there's really no difference between the two in practical terms.

And for the record, I don't think Benny is a "compulsive liar", I just think he's kidding himself. A liar would be more open to debate (because a liar could make up more lies). People who're kidding themselves avoid questions, because finding out that they don't know the answers is a challenge to their whole viewpoint.

I've tried asking questions to Benny, and all he's ever done is brush them aside. I've stopped trying.

Benny's blog's been going for years now. Why should we evaluate each "mission" seperately? We have adequate data already on which to draw conclusions.
