Johanna, thanks for opening the team thread!
I'm still undecided whether I'll stay in the team. It depends a little on how much I'll be focusing on Persian (looking good at the moment) and whether someone else joins with Persian. I just wanted to mention that I used to study Hebrew, so I'd be very interested in following logs of Hebrew learners and might be able to comment a little as well. Well that seems like a bit of a stretch...haha. But yes, I'm not surprised she could understand some! A lot of the vocabulary is very similar or even basically the same, and there are a lot of similarities in grammar as well! But with the way modern Hebrew has changed (mostly in terms of phonology), they are nowhere near mutually intelligible. However, if you are familiar with the way Hebrew was historically (which I'm sure your roommate was), then you can understand a lot more, especially if you have a good imagination! I found that knowing Hebrew helped me quite a lot with Arabic. There were a lot of words I recognized right away or at least had an easy time remembering because of their similarity to Hebrew words. The grammar didn't seem so bad either. I always hear people talking about how difficult Arabic grammar is, and they are right, but personally it didn't really shock me that much since a lot of it already seemed familiar to me. :) Edited by zecchino1991 on 13 December 2012 at 9:41pm 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

No problem, druckfehler, take your time. Since we're a small team we'll probably stay
open to new members at least until February. If you don't mind, I want to keep your name and TL on the first post in case other Persian learners stop by. Zecchino1991, my roommate majored in linguistics with a concentration in Semitic languages so maybe that had more to do with it than her knowledge of Hebrew. Ahlan wa sahlan!! You can definitely join us. You want to improve your English, is that right? Your profile says you're native English speaker learning Arabic. Either way, would you mind writing in English on this thread or in Arabic and English. Sometimes Google translates things weird and most of us are beginners at Arabic and in one case studying Hebrew instead. Great! Thanks! I'd love to join this group. Basically, I said I found out about this group from the other link. (I haven't visited this sub-forum in a while, probably because it's a sad reminder of how uncommitted I've become.) I would like to join this group so I can get my Arabic back on track.
