This past week was a sort of test week for TAC. I'm a creature of habit and it's
probably gonna take me at least a couple of weeks to get into the habit of studying three languages for so many hours. That and two days off from work meant more immersion and a lot less studying. Italian Study: 4 hours & 3 minutes Immersion: 2 hours & 7 minutes Major Challenge: Read 4 pages/50 books (up from 0), Watched 1.4/50 films (up from 0), Had 0/50 conversations and 0/50 pieces of writing. My immersion consisted solely of watching episodes of Winx Club (cartoons) in Italian with no subtitles. I watched six episodes, bringing my "movie" total for the Major Challenge from 0 to 1.4/50. I much prefer watching series and cartoons than movies. Unless, of course, I know it's gonna be a good movie. I can easily watch a 20- 30 episode of something while eating, whereas a movie requires more of a time commitment in one sitting. Also, by watching series I can see how my understanding is improving from day to day since they tend to use similar vocabulary in most episodes. For studying I just did Pimsleur, Anki and loaded Anki with a new Assimil Lesson. Barnes & Noble was having a post-Christmas sale and I couldn't resist checking to see if they had any language books on sale. Of course, they didn't. But I bought this awesome book called Read & Think Italian. It has short articles written by natives about Italian life, arts and famous people. Each page has a bilingual glossary on the margin of the page so I can quickly glance at the words I don't know without slowing down my reading. I, of course, made sure to load the unknown words to Anki. The book also comes with a CD which has native speakers reading the articles. Unfortunately, only 20 out of the 112 articles from the book are read on the CD. So I'm gonna make sure the articles I read next are on the CD and leave the rest for when I'm more advanced. Croatian Study: 7 hours & 11 minutes Immersion: 7 hours & 32 minutes Major Challenge: Read 0.5/50 books, Watched 16.8/50 films (up from 11.6), Had 0.2/50 conversations, Wrote 73 words 0.4/50 pieces of writing (up from 0) I watched seven episodes of True Blood with Croatian subtitles. At first I thought I was cheating since the audio was in English, but I got at least half a page of new vocabulary per episode. Half of which were curse words and derogatory terms. I also learned some more curses and "interesting" vocabulary from watching two episodes of Weeds also with the subtitles. So between my new vocabulary and the formality of Pimsleur and Teach Yourself I can sound like a good ole manic- depressive schizo who went off her meds. Edited to add that they spoke a little bit of Croatian in season 7 episode 1 of Weeds.I couldn't believe my ears and had to rewind and check that i had heard and read the subtitles right. For studying I had to go back to doing Pimsleur as I'm starting to lose what little speaking ability I had. I've also started having conversations in my head in Croatian. I also spent a lot of time reviewing Anki, listened to In-flight Croatian and did chapter 14 of Teach Yourself Croatian. Not very exciting. However, I am super excited to have finally written something other than notes and vocabulary words. It was only 73 words (a short email to a friend and a TY translation exercise) but I'm really looking forward to writing more emails on a regular basis and then move on to essays in a few more months from now. Arabic Study: 6.5 hours Immersion: 44 minutes of active music listening Half Super Challenge Films + Conversation: No progress this week, still at 0.3/100 films and 5 mins/3,000 conversation minutes It was a sad week for my Arabic studies. Luckily, one of my Alef teammates sent me a friendly reminder about not listing on my list of resources a book I said I was gonna use (thanks Takato!). So I took a long trip to a library in the middle of nowhere Queens to pick up kullu tamam! and Colloquial Arabic of Egypt both with audio. So I expect this week will be better. Last night I did part of the first chapter of kullu tamam!, but other than that my studies consisted of doing Pimsleur Egyptian Arabic (again) and learning/practicing the script. I get very excited when I learn to write in script words that I'm already familiar with. I expect this week will be a lot better now that I have two textbooks to study with, but the majority of the time will still go to learning the script. Quick shout-out to the Queens Library system. They have more resources for Arabic than the NYC Public Library system, but they're really bad at fulfilling inter-library loans even though the item is checked-in and sitting on the right shelf. So if you want something from a far-away branch don't bother to put in a request, you'll be waiting many months to get it, if not forever. But beggars can't be choosers, so I'll be making another trip this week to another Queens branch to pick up some old Arabic movies. It'll be interesting to see how you handle three languages throughout the year.

Luckily, I expect to get Italian out of the way in 6 months, so then I'll only be learning two languages and maintaining Italian. But yes, as someone who's not an experienced language learner this is gonna be an interesting (and hopefully positive) experience. As to why I'm doing Pimsleur again, right now I'm concentrating on learning the script and when I read the instructions in the book I go a little overboard trying to get my tongue in the right spot. Being familiar with the Pimsleur vocab I can take a step back and notice where my tongue is for some of the more difficult letters. Thanks Amerykanka! I'm just in the first few lessons of Assimil so if you get it soon we could do it together. If we're doing it together it will motivate me to do it everyday, which has not been the case at all.
