@Josquin: Thanks! Your tips are great. The "subject with und one" is actually weird since that is just like English. Yes, I have chronic issues with verb agreements and plusquamperfect is a definite pitfall. I don't know if I will continue the story, I have no idea "whodunit". ;) I put in a lot of weird stuff too, the Internat and Reitschule, for example, derived from vocabulary I was learning at the time. I don't know if I could develop much of a plot working exclusively in German, but it could be fun.
@Sunja: As you undoubtedly know as a native English speaker, prateritum is relatively easy since that is our default simple past tense. At the time I originally wrote about half of this (the earlier draft), I was reading krimis, but not so much more recently. It's actually kind of fun to do creative writing in another language. This week's update: Making progress. Saw a youtube video about language learning that recommended taking a day completely off, which I did except I listened to music and surfed the web in German. Ich finde es großartig, dass du kreatives Schreiben auf Deutsch übst. Das zeigt viel Engagement und du wirst dadurch deine Ausdrucksfähigkeit wesentlich verbessern.

@AlOlaf: Danke dir. Dieses Woche habe ich leider fast nichts auf Deutsch geschrieben, weil ich so viel gelesen habe und so faul bin!
Weekly update: gory details as always in my first post. In a nutshell, I am spending most of my "study time" reading. I'm simultaneously reading 3 books: one easy, one difficult and one "just right". Reading is a good activity for a chilly February, and it's so much more interesting than looking at word lists... I would like to write something this coming week instead of being lazy. Reading is great for winter. And summer. (I just remembered how much I like reading outside!) And I wouldn't call your week "lazy" - at least you're staying with it. It's definitely been a quiet (and here grey) month. I myself am looking forward to winter being over!

As usual, details are in my first post. Another week has gone by, and I only wrote a couple of emails. I wouldn't call it writer's block, but I've come to dread writing: maybe I'm just too perfectionistic? or is it my own weird version of the silent period? I did do a lot of reading and though I typically don't watch a lot of films, and I almost never watch romantic films, I did watch multiple romantic movies this week. OMG, what's happening to me...? Bergblut was a romantic melodrama with Tyrolean dialect. Im Juli was an entertaining and absurd romantic comedy about two people traveling from Hamburg to Istanbul. I saw the silent version of Faust with intertitles in Fraktur and was exposed to a few words I probably will never see again. What can beat the Devil? Liebe, of course! Emil Jannings as Mephisto was marvelous. And to cap off the week I saw the live broadcast (in a movie theater) of Parsifal from the Met. Really amazing, though almost 6 hours long (no I didn't count it as study). I was surprised how much I could understand even though it was sung using 19th century poetic language. I couldn't pick much up of the choral singing, though. In the past I've been somewhat lukewarm towards opera, but this was truly incredible. I've been won over. After all that emotion I think I need to go read some dry scientific texts or watch some documentaries to regain my equilibrium. This coming week I'm going to try AlOlaf's technique of reading aloud and I WILL write something. Versprochen!

I had to look up some words for this one, MRI for example. Is MRT the right Abkurzung for Magnetresonanztomographie (if that's even the right word)? I should have kept it simple, but I wanted to write something besides emails this week and this is what came out...Sorry. The talks I heard were really interesting, but the recap is a bit messy.
Letztes Wochenende habe ich an zwei interessante Vorlesungen gehört. Es gab einen Tag der Offenen Tür bei der Universität, daran mein Sohn studiert. Ich wollte drei Vorlesungen hören aber leider kam ich zu spät um eine Rede über Außenpolitik zu hören. Die erste Sprache ging um was wir über uns von unseren Maschinen lernen können. Der Professor sprach über die Auswirkungen auf unser Mitgefühl als wir durch Computers Beziehungen miteinander bilden. Die Wichtigste sei, das Gesicht zu sehen um jemand zu vertrauen. Aber seine Forschung nachwies, dass wir unsere Computers fast wie Personen trauen und nur zu einem anderen fremde Computer oder Person, über unseren Computer beschweren werden, obwohl wenn gefragt, wir wissen, dass unser Computer nicht gekränkt wird. Der Professor legte auch Beweise, dass Veränderungen in unsere Gehirne vorkommen, als wir viel Zeit zum Multitasking widmen. Die MRT der Gehirne der Leute, die viele Medien gleichzeitig nutzen, sehen ganz anders aus, als die, die sind an nur einen einzigen Inhalt konzentriert. Wenn der Inhalt der zwei Medien eine Beziehung hat, gibt es kein Konflikt oder Gehirneffekt, z.B. wenn man zu gleich ein Fernsehprogramm über Löwen anschaut und eine Internetseite über Löwen liest. Die zweite Vorlesung trat um künstliche Intelligenz. Der Professor erzählte, wie schwer es sei, wenn man einen Roboter denken wie die Menschen können lehren versucht. Es ist ziemlich einfach, die Roboten ein Befehl durchführen zu programmieren, aber die Herausforderung besteht aus, dass die Roboten nicht leicht wahrnehmen oder sogar erkennen, wenn sie neue Information der Umwelt erhalten. Der Professor und seine Studenten programmierten seine Roboten mit den gleichen Algorithmen, die wir Menschen benutzen um eine Kante zu einsehen. Dann haben die Roboten eine Woche der Youtube-Sendungen "gesehen" mit dem Ziel um eine Gesichte zu erkennen. Am Ende der Woche haben sie an zwei verschiedene Gesichter erkannt: Eines war das Gesicht eines Mannes und das anderes war das Gesicht einer Katze.
