I'm trying to translate another one of Karel's songs and need help. Here's what I have so far:
Miriam Denně se ráno ptám (Every morning I ask myself) proč musím vstávat sám (why I have to get up alone) odpověď dávno znám (I've known the answer for a long time) jsem samotář. (I'm a loner) Dlouho už doufám, (I've been hoping for a long time already) že se jednou ráno (that one morning) má víčka mírně zvednou. --> no idea what that means Já spatřím náhle čísi jednou tvář. (I suddenly see someone's face) Odlétá spánek jak jarní vánek,(sleeps flies away like a spring breeze) jak svatojánek díky Miriam. (like ?? thanks to Miriam) Sedíme právě u stolu v trávě, (We're sitting at a table in the grass) při ranní kávě s krásnou Miriam. (drinking morning coffee with beautiful Miriam) To je ten dávný příběh lásky (It's this old story of love) zázračné, živé a průzračné, (wonderful, lively and clear) kterou mi dává, dává Miriam. (which (refers to love) Miriam gives me) Říkají známí, že všechno dá mi, (They say ?? that she gives me everything) s noblesou dámy kráska Miriam. (with the nobility of a lady beautiful Miriam) Celý svět má teď vůni růží (The whole world smells like roses now) růžových, tam kde byl pláč je smích. (?, where there was crying, there is laughter now) Už nejsem sám. (I'm no longer alone) Jsem jejím hájemstvím,--> no idea what that means každý den dlouho spím. (Every day I sleep long) Pletu si tvůj sen s mím (I confuse your dream with mine) a mám ho rád. (and I like it a lot) Ale, když spolu dříve vstanem (But when we get up together) a jdem se toulat krásným ránem, (and walk to a beautiful morning zapomínám, že dlouho chtěl jsem spát. (I forget that I wanted to sleep long) I'm wondering about the use of "vstanem" and "jdem". To me, those are Slovak endings of the first person singular or are those short forms of "vstame" and "jdeme" (that's how I translated them. (rose (as color, refer to rose <- "pink roses"), where there was crying, there is laughter now) Už nejsem sám. (I'm no longer alone) Jsem jejím hájemstvím, I am her preserve /as in "hájemství=služební obvod hajného", meaning "wildlife preserve", "Jagdbezirk", "region"; it is used for something exclusively belonging to somebody or to a group/ každý den dlouho spím. (Every day I sleep long) Pletu si tvůj sen s mým (I confuse your dream with mine) a mám ho rád. (and I like it a lot) Ale, když spolu dříve vstanem (But when we get up together) a jdem se toulat krásným ránem, (and walk to a beautiful morning zapomínám, že dlouho chtěl jsem spát. Vstanem and jdem is "obecná čeština". You have about 50:50 chance to hear either variant in spoken Czech. V minulý sobutu jsem ukončila moje noční směny a od té doby jsem nepracovala. Znaména,
že jsem měla hodně casu, abych studovala češtinu. Myslím, že jsem vyušíla čas dobře. Každý den jsem opakovala slova na ANKI a na Memrise. Ukončila jsem číst a přeložít přiběhy za knihy Pražské legendy a poslechnala jsem všichni texty třikrát. Včera jsem začinala pracovat s knihou Čeština pro život. Navíc jsem méla vyuku pětkrát tento týden. Mluvíli jsem o různých tématech. Napřiklad jsme četli text o knice Cesta kolem světa za 80 dní francouzského autora Julese Verna. Znám knihu, jsem to četla když jsem byla dívka a chtěla bych to číst český někdy. Další téma byl cesta Čecha do Rumunska a navíc jsme četli kratký text od knihy Karla Čapeka. Se mi líbílo a proto půjdu zitra do mistní knihovky, abych půjčila román toho popularního českého autora. Studovala jsem taky gramatiku. Snažím se najít spravný aspekt slovesa, ale ještě je moc těžký pro mne a často neumím obě formy nebo nevím jaká forma je imperfektní a jaká forma je perfektní. Ale se budu to učít. Naplanuju cestovaní do Česka v květnu a stravit některé dny na okoli Turnova, abych mohla cvičit mluvit česky a samozřejmě taky abych poznala český ráj a návštěvít hrad Valdštejn. Navíc se těším už na dovolenou na jihu země a v Praze. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Here are my corrections. I am using underlining instead of strike through. Italics means that another word would be better, but it could stay as it is.
aspekt: I hope I am not mystifying you, but no Czech student would use this word. The Czech commonly used word is vid. imperfektní / perfektní: again, Czech student would use nedokonavý a dokonavý In the beginning - "nepracovala": nepracovala in this context would mean that you didn't moove a finger. Not only you didn't work, you wouldn't do chores or learning. What you wanted to say probably was that you hadn't to go to work and had time to do other things. dopřeložila isn't "nice" or "elegant" Czech word, but in this context could be used. Otherwise, you would need to split the sentence. "Dočetla jsem příběhy a dodělala jsem jejich překlad (těch příběhů). The reason is that each verb needs another case. dívka: Czech girl (or woman) woldn't say it like this. Either "Když jsem byla malá" (meaning childhood or teens) or "Když jsem byla mladší" (anything younger than now but speaking about years, probably) or "Když jsem byla mladá" (when mature person talks about her younger years). Another variant is "před několika lety / už dávno / kdysi". chtěla bych to někdy číst / chtěla bych to někdy přečíst: "Přečíst" is finished - you want not only to read the book in Czech, but finish it in this language. "Číst" is the process - the reading itself is important, you could live with trying to read the book and not finishing it. Or, another meaning when spoken by native Czech - "Chtěla bych to někdy číst" - you want to read it to somebody, to people (like author reading the book to his readers or like mother reading the book to the children). Again, the reading itself is important, nobody expect the book to be finished at one time. Please take care where you put the accents. I could be mistaken, but the Czech "čárka" is pretty straightforward. If the vowel is spoken long, the "čárka" belongs there. There is a difference between length of a vowel and the word stress sometimes - a sylable can be stressed but spoken short. Edit: Another note: Text o knize is reading about the book, reading the book is text z knihy. You could have been doing both, that's why I didn't correct it in your text. Thank you very much for your corrections. I had to laugh about aspekt/vid.,
imperfect/nedokonavý and perfect/dokonavý. So that's the result when your teachers explain grammar to you in English and when your own grammar books are written in German or English :-). Well, I guess I won't forget it again. Accents have always been a problem. It's not that I don't hear them but I simply forget them when I type. Perhaps I should just get used to using the numbers on my keyboard like for ě, š, č, ř and ž. At the moment I type ˇ + a which then becomes á and sometimes forget the first step, so to say. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I have seen that you are very active in Italki. I am also trying to have more conversations as I will focus more on speaking. Can you recommend Italki?
