Le Russe sans peine first came out in 1948. Here is a very useful thread comparing the three editions, how they differ, and what are their strong and weak points:
Comparing Assimil Russian 1951/1971/2004 The recommendation there is to start with the 1970s course and afterwards maybe complement it with one of the others. This is what I am doing. Recently they brought out a fourth one, Le Russe. Many people think the previous one (I think from 1994/95 actually) was dreadful, but in their official history Assimil produced a letter by Jacques Chirac, then French president, thanking the company for sending him this course and helping him with his Russian. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I finished the introduction and the first chapter of assimil russian, 1971.

How does Michel Thomas Russian compare to the German? I assume he himself recorded the

The Michel Thomas Russian course is not done by him. I believe the original four (Spanish, French, Italian, and German) are the only ones he did himself.

I think I finally figured out what to do with french. I can't start from scratch, you see, because I already have a level where I understand very well, but can't express myself. During the past couple of months I thought I might fix that, but I ended up not studying french, not knowing what suits my particular situation. Untill yesterday.
I found online a good old 1913 french prose composition book, and I am going to follow it from start to finish, remembering along the way all the grammar, vocabulary etc. It has a lexicon at the end, and notes and everything. It also has handwritten notes from a student from the past. How is that for a plan? Do you think it will work in my case? Is that a valid learning approach?
