After having read about that program in one of emk's posts, I installed freetuxtv and proceded to add lots of Chinese tv streams. Now, truth be told, I very seldom watch tv at all, so that may turn up to be yet another interesting piece of software I installed and never use. Continued reading 余华 's 我没有自己的名字. As the day of the test is approaching fast, whenever I have no time, I should stop reviewing my other lists rather than that one. He leído un artículo a propósito de un asesino que vivía en Valladolid en el siglo XVI. El llamado Proaza quiere ser médico y se entrega a los artes de la anatomía y de la disección. I've had a lot of work until very late for my real-life job lately. So I've just had the time to do the bare minimum, as far as languages are concerned: concentrate on Mandarin vocabulary reviews (HSK4, HSK5, characters, collected vocabulary). That said, I've taken the time to go on reading a few paragraphs of 裘山山's 下午茶 and ... Read an article saying that 俄外长：欧盟向叙反对派供武器决定违反国际 法。 According to the Russian foreign affairs minister, the decision taken by EU to supply weapons to the Syrian opposition is a violation of international law. (which, BTW, is a very bizarre way of distorting the facts). The article Read some more of 下午茶. A psychological, inward-looking short story. That's a welcome change after 余华。 Did the usual vocabulary chores: HSK4, HSK5, characters, random words. While walking home, listened some more to the podcast about 浮在黄浦江的死猪。 FI As I like to read articles on the same news in different languages, I also visited selkouutiset and read a short text saying that "EU:n asevientikielto Syyriaan päättyy perjantaina" (the EU arms embargo on Syria will end on Friday). In principle, I agree that it could be useful to listen to your TL while working or attending to other daily chores: tune in to some radio in the morning and just let it play, even if you're only listening distractedly or not at all. After all, who knows? Your brain might be processing at least some of that input. In practice, I've found that I'm mostly unable to concentrate on my work while the radio is playing. Too bad. Maybe that's a skill that can be trained. Anyway, yesterday was an exception, I had some dumb work to do, so I listened to Radio Taiwan International and some Shanghai radio station for several hours. I didn't understand much - I wasn't paying much attention either. So I listened to a new ChinesePod lesson (about a broken washing machine, of all things), which was probably more useful. But I like to listen to the radio, from time to time, half expecting the "aha" moment. I also reviewed my vocab and read a few paragraphs of 下午茶 and that's all. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Did the 听力 part of an HSK4 mock test and succeeded in a 还可以-ish way (36 points out of 45). For 2 days, I've been away from my computer. Yet, in spite of other pressing obligations, I somehow managed to review HSK5 and random vocabulary on my phone, but of course not the HSK4 part, because I use Skritter and, contrary to what I've written a few weeks ago, I'm unable to use Skritter on my Android phone, which is a shame. So, when I could finally log in to the Skritter site today, I discovered that my backlog was bursting at the seams (217 reviews to go). Finished reading 裘山山's very touching short story called 《下午茶》. How strange that fiction should sometimes resonate so deeply because of events and emotions you're experiencing in your own life. Linguistically speaking, allowing for the fact that I was reading inside the cosy environment of Pleco reader, the text was not too hard. The kind of problems I had were interesting, though: in a sentence like 田湄心里并没有出现想象中的期待和兴奋，反 而很不安。(田湄 is the main character), I knew all the words but the meaning of the passage somehow resisted due to the abstract nature of the vocabulary the author uses - quite a difference with the way Yu Hua, for instance, writes. Read two articles. First, a somewhat silly one about the premature demise of the "longest word of the German language", i.e. Rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenuebertragungsg esetz. 这一单词被摒弃因为欧盟终于止对牛肉的严格 检测。 Of course it begs the question of what a word actually is. A written unit? A semantic unit? A syntactic unit? And what is a word in isolating languages? In polysynthetic languages? Linguists cunningly got rid of that debate by inventing the morphemes and deciding to no longer use the w-word. By the way, the Chinese version, i.e. “牛肉标签监管责任委托法” is a mouthful too. It could be said to consist of 6 words, or 11 characters, or anywhere from 20 to 30 components, or 92 strokes. Or maybe it's just a single word too. After that, I read another, longer, article explaining how 拉脱维亚快要加入欧元区了。 (Latvia is about to become a member of the €urozone). -- I've started a very interesting short story by 西西 called 《像我这样的一个女子》。 The sentences are sometimes long and hard to follow (for me) but the mere fact that I can find my way out of these passages and grasp their meaning is very encouraging. -- Did the 听力 part of another HSK4 mock test and fared slightly better than yesterday (37 points out of 45). Listened to/read the 听力 part of yet another HSK4 mock test. -- Vocabulary: HSK4 and HSK5 (review only), characters (review + 2 new characters), random vocabulary (review + 20-30 new words). Did yet another HSK4 mock test, actually the 听力 part only, because I don't have the time to do the whole test and I know this is my weakest point (I also fear the writing part, but it's very short at the HSK4 level, so I may not even try that). I got 38/45, which is OK, and yet I'm not satisfied: in particular, I got 9 questions right among the last 10, which are made of longer extracts - but that was sheer luck. In most cases, I didn't understand anything, which is a shame at this point in my studies. Ah well, the exam is in 3 days, I won't be able to improve that skill noticeably by then. 1 person has voted this message useful |
