I often tend to take the path of least resistance: doing the things that are easy rather
than those that lead to real progress.

On the other hand, doing things the hard way doesn't necessarily lead to the best results. As an
example: polyglot Moses McCormick in the US once noticed a man who studied Japanese for a few years
in class and not making progress in his conversation. Many language classes focus on grammar and
vocabulary. You can be studying for a few years and not feel confident conducting yourself in a social
setting.

About 8 months ago I started focusing on Mandarin. I practically cut my English TV & radio
programming down to just the news. Watching TV in a target language everyday is time consuming but
at the same time enjoyable so you don't really notice the effort you put into it. Every time I come across
a word / phrase I'd put it on my vocabulary list. In the beginning you are going to be adding a lot more
words to your list. As time goes by you will find in a given TV program you have just 1 or 2 words to
add.

The biggest thing I struggle with is containing myself.
I tend to work a lot to reach unrealistic goals.

+1 for time to study. Now that I have a full time job I really regret flitting away so much time when I was a
student. I guess it's true what they say - you don't appreciate what you have until it's gone!

The same thing happened to me as well.. Now I am focused on learning Italian, and I have little time for it, because I work and I live on my own so I don't have much time to focus on it...
But when I was student and when I was searching for a job, I had the whole day of free time, and I was so lazy... So it is true.. We (or at least, most of us) don't appreciate what we have..

I struggle most with lack of balance in my studying, sometimes I just listen to music and neglect other things such as reading, writing or speaking.

1. Listening comprehension at full speed.

2. Vocabulary - my memory isn't that good, but discovering Anki has been a great help.

3. Conjugating verbs correctly in conversation. So many times someone points out a mistake to me, and I instantly think "of course!". I knew intellectually what the right verb form was, but I said the infinitive or just parroted back the form the speaker used e.g. "¿hablas español?", "Si, hablas un poco".

Idiom is hard too, but these other problems are far more fundamental for me at this stage.
