Writing is usually a skill that lags behind the others. Writing well is an art, and one
that is extremely difficult to master. In a foreign language, doubly so, and I actually
have plenty experience with it.

I see, but even if you needed corrections for the accuracy, that's still a very good text. As I said, the corrected version would indicate basic fluency.
(Just in case - upgrading Russian to "speaks" would require basic fluency. if that's your goal for this year then obviously you're already intermediate, which would keep the language as "studies".)

I never got around to completing the February challenge, so I make up for that by doing the March challenge twice, that is I have learnt two songs instead of one.
I've chosen two songs by my favourite Russian singer for the time being, Константин Бубнов. That made the challenge quite interesting as I could not find the lyrics to his songs anywhere, and I did an extensive search on the net. This meant that I had to write down what I was hearing, and look up words I did not know. This in itself is not easy when it comes to Russian, because vowel reduction etc. means that you cannot be sure whether you heard an o or an a, or an е or и or я. So it's taken some messing around with both online and paperback dictionaries, but I believe I got there in the end, except for a couple of doubts I still have, so if you see anything obviously wrong or odd, please tell me. Anyway, below are the two songs with their translation into English.

Bubnov represents what is called русский шансон, and these are two rather quiet, melodic songs, the topic of both being travelling, as you will see. You can listen to both of them, as well as other songs by Bubnov on his website.

As the Cossack travelled south,
Soon comes the frost of the white blizzards
Soon I will see my home town
Everything will be as before, I will be with you.

And outside the window the posts flash by
Only a hundred wheels in the middle of the silence
The neighbour in the compartment was hoping and sleeps
As can be seen, he is certainly not hurrying home.

Surgut – Moscow, the travel happens
Surgut – Moscow, just wait for me
The watch has finished, I am going home
I know you are bored, I’ll soon be with you.

And I am like a crazy, I cannot sleep
I smoke the whole night, of course I am waiting
How many times have I imagined
I knock on your door and I see you.

The wagon is shaking, the train is hurrying along
The throat is like mad, and my heart is pounding,
There is my home town, I step out on the platform
The taxi driver takes me to my old part of town.

Somewhere on board is Odessa on vacation
The stewardess wishes the passengers Happy New Year
Like Snegyrka she hands out wine and fruit
New year in the cabin after the southern bay
Five thousand meters under the wing.

The way you spend New Year, thus will the year be
So again a plain, let God judge us
New acquaintances, eyes and faces,
Quarrels, conversations, again I will dream,
Everything goes its usual way.

New Year on the plane
A toast to the brave pilot
To the mechanic, the stewardess
And little mummy Odessa.

And in Moscow there has long been crisp frost
I bring you as a gift three branches of mimosa
I know, you will say: I have waited for seven hours,
And then you will softly embrace me until the morning
Such are our New Years.

New Year on the plane
A toast to the brave pilot
To the mechanic, the stewardess
And little mummy Odessa.

Here is a song I came across in the Soviet musical Матрос с "Кометы" (A Sailor from "The Comet") (1958) late one night while browsing on Kaban.tv
A nice sea shanty sung by Gleb Romanov, which can't fail to get stuck in your head!

This was mostly transcribed and translated by me, but ultimately I googled it to have the correct version, below.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2oqnbejS6s

---

He who is born on the sea
Falls in love for all time
White masts en route
In the fog of a sea port
Light from a lighthouse upon the waves
Southern night reveries
The bluest in the world
My Black sea
My Black sea!

The sea in times gone by
Sang me songs like my mother
The sea taught me
To weather terrible storms
I adore my sailor's bunk
Our quarters are modest
The bluest in the world
My Black sea
My Black sea!

The storm's waves moan
The far distance beckons
Do not be so jealous, my dear
The Black Sea, to me,
As hard as this fate is
I could not live without her
The bluest in the world
My Black sea
My Black sea!

Crashing on the shores sublimely
Waves from faraway seas
Where you have never sailed
There where you have met friends
It soars like a proud bird
The flag on your ship
They can always agree
All the sailors of the world

This is my first Russian challenge. I haven’t tried to memorize the lyrics because I
simply can’t learn any songs by heart. I don’t remember having memorized any song in
my life, even in my mother tongues. I somehow have problems I will never know how to
solve; therefore, I decide to concentrate on the meaning of the songs and improve my
vocabulary knowledge.

I have chosen the Russian national anthem and it seemed to be pretty nice.

Here it is the original lyric and its translation in English:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nlpyh2TL3e0

Russia-our sacred state,
Russia-our beloved country.
A mighty will, a great glory
Are yours forever for all time!

Chorus:
Be glorious, our free Fatherland,
Ancient union of brotherly peoples,
Ancestor given wisdom of the people!
Be glorious, country! We are proud of you!

From the southern seas to the polar region
Lie our forests and our fields.
You are one in the world! You are one of a kind,
Native land protected by God!

Chorus

Wide spaces for dreams and for living
Are open to us by the coming years.
Our faith in our Fatherland gives us strength.
So it was, so it is, and so it will always be!

Chorus

Thanks a lot for the corrections, this were the parts where I struggled the most to understand the meaning and after consulting dictionaries I finally went for something I thought might be right, although sometimes it didn't really add up. Obviously, when you don't know the word, it is hard to be sure of what sounds you actually heard, even more so in a song.

Just one question, can you explain the use of конечную in this sentence: ВсЮ ночь прокурил, конечную жду? I take it is the female accusative form of конечный - but not sure if it refers back to ночь.
