Well, I didn't sit the N3, but from what I've understood, it seems to be a level at which what you need to know is in fact what is used in
daily life. I think I read somewhere that this is the level starting which you can "easily" converse with people daily. So I'd say watch
loads of dramas/mangas/movies and read tons.
If you want proper grammar study, I personally like the 総まとめ series in that they divide per day and you can see an improvement in a short
span of time (6 or 8 weeks depending on the book).

If you want to have an idea of what is "new" in the N3 compared to N4, maybe check Go-i which is
in French (double advantage since you're studying it too^^) and has examples if you click on the grammar point or
Tanos which is in English and rather well done.

Thank you Yuhakko, I'll give Go-i a try (two birds, one stone right? =) ) and the 総まとめ series you mentioned. I've seen them in shops but never did more than glance at them. I'll have a proper look next time.

I have used Tanos before and while I think it is a bit dry, it is quite useful.

---

I haven't been updating as often this week because I am quite busy, which has also affected my language studies. However, never fear I did take some notes!

--

29/1:

Japanese: Worked through a vocabulary list and added them to my Anki deck. The list had been building for quite some time.

Read 25 pages of the light novel. Will translate the first chapter once I have finished reading it for the first time. (Not looking forward to translating it...)

French: none

30/1:

Japanese: none

French: Two history podcasts.

31/1:

Japanese: None
French: None

1/2/15:

Japanese: Day to day, nothing special really.

French: My paper deck and read some articles online.

2/2:

Japanese: none

French: Listened to my usual history podcast.

3/2:

Japanese: Anki, Revised 20 cards, and looked at 10 new ones. Read 6 pages of the light novel and 1 article from my magazine.

French; None

4/2:

Japanese: None (study, still have day to day, but it doesn't count)
French: None

5/2:

Japanese: None
French: Read some comics before I went to bed. Funnily enough the comics take more concentration than the articles. Informal language I suppose.

---

Most of my problem this week is organisation. Even though I am busy I need to put a little of time aside for languages. I used to do it quite well, and Anki is very useful for this, I just need to get back in the habit of it.

In the last two weeks of February I had started using Anki again and reading what I could. I didn't keep any records though, so I will begin anew from the 3rd of this month.

Japanese:

4/4:

Japanese:

Some reading and Anki.

French:

none

5/4:

Japanese:

Lots of speaking today, in day to day situations and with tutor. I decided on beginning with a tutor because I need to make some changes to my learning patterns (which lacked any communication with others). Hopefully this will give me some confidence to get talking and writing again.

Reading some manga by 横山光輝. Same series as before, on the Chinese Three Kingdoms. I was able to find and buy the next few volumes. I understand more than I did in the past and I'm really enjoying the story at the moment.

French:

none

6/4:

Japanese:

Lots of conversation practice today. Day to day and had a conversation on history. =)

Did quite a bit of reading on history and of course 横山光輝.

Trying to listen to the radio all of the time while I am at home.

French:

none

7/4, 8/4:

Japanese:

none

French:

Made a few new cards for my grammar deck.

No time for much else sadly. I am too busy at the weekends.

9/3 - 15/3

Have to use a weekly post for last week.Got quite a bit done Japanese wise though!

Japanese:

Reading:

        Manga - 9 volumes (7 - 200 pages or so)
                            (2 - 500 pages or so)
Magazines: Just read lightly. Perhaps 2 articles in total.

Anki: 3 times for the week (20 review / 10 new)

Speaking: Lots of day to day. My grammar is still horrible, but I am getting some confidence back. So that's a bonus at least.

Grammar: Have been taking notes. Will be talking with tutor to practice and to get some extra explanation.

French:

Very little. Had a few conversations, however I haven't completely fixed my mistakes. I'm in that twilight zone of knowing I am making the mistakes but blundering when I am trying to fix them.

16/3:

Japanese:

Mostly day to day conversation. More so that usual. Making a mess but confidence is up!

Some Anki. Just reviews.

French:

Not today

17/3:

Japanese:

Same as the previous day. Did a little reading.

French:

Not today

18/3

Japanese: Lots of day to day conversation. Same as yesterday, a mess! =)

Got back to reading a history book (with a pencil). Read about 10 pages. I am finding it to be quite tough. I find I can quickly loose comprehension and reading becomes kanji pronunciation practice, which is good but not what my goal was for reading. Perhaps I should look into bilingual readers or decide to read a book I already know? I'm not so sure I would have motivation for the latter really.

Thinking again about the JLPT N3. I will need to make a decision soon. I don't really have a clear benefit of getting the qualification though.... I think!

French:

A short conversation. Same issues with grammar. However I know this stage will take some time.

French:
