Japanese: Relaxed listening to the radio in the morning. Some day to day. Read some manga French: None 21/3 Anki: New:10 Review 40 Speaking: Day to day. Have (almost) decided to take the JLPT N3 in July. I'm so excited about it (sarcasm). I have decided what books I will use too. Japanese: Anki: 10 new 40 review Speaking: Day to day French: none. 23/3: Japanese: Listened to NHK radio. Reading: A short book on the last shogun. (I had read about 15 pages over the last few days) Decided I would sit the JLPT N3 exam in July. French: None 24/3 Japanese: Listening: Radio in the morning Speaking: Mostly day to day Anki: 10 new 20 review. JLPT: For the test I have decided to work through two books by Ask publishing, にほんご５００問. I have both N5-4 and N3-2. I need to revise my knowledge of the N5 4 level so I will work through the former at twice the recommended speed (taking two weeks instead of four). I will use it to target any problems I have with grammar. I will then use my grammar dictionary and my tutor to solve any issues. First week, day one and two completed. 25/3 - 4/4
Japanese: Anki: I had been working on Anki almost daily (on my own deck, the vocabulary was from words I didn't know as I read) until the 29/3. After that I did not have access to a computer so I worked the old fashioned way. ;) Reading: Did a bit of reading over the last week and a half. About 350 pages of manga and about 30 (ish) pages of two books. Not as much as I usually do, however. I was able to find a book on world history that has a good balance between the text and diagrams. Hopefully I will be able to use this to pick up some vocabulary and use this book as a bridge between magazine reading (in which I can just comprehend the topic covered) and novels, which are a lot harder for me as there are less visual clues. Will post in detail on my reading later on. Conversation: Had tons of conversation over the last week and a half. I have certainly improved and I think I am back, or perhaps a little better, to the level I was when I was working two years ago. It is a good confidence boost. Although, as always there are good days and bad! Grammar: にほんご５００問 N5-4 has been a good way to revise it. I recently made a paper flashcard deck which I will be adding to in the coming days. I haven't brought up my score in the practice tests yet, but it will rise in the coming weeks. JLPT: にほんご５００問 only. I am half way through the book. I hope to be finished it by the end of next week. I will make flash cards for everything I have gotten wrong and will spend one more week revising them all before moving on to にほんご５００問 N3-2. I will have to begin studying the test's vocabulary as well. I will begin that in two weeks through Anki. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Bit more than a week that! Japanese: Conversation: Mostly day to day and with tutor. I am getting better at general conversation, but specialist areas (ie: anything outside of very general conversation) is quite a struggle. Vocabulary will come with time and exposure (plus flash cards). =) Anki: I have moved over to old fashioned flash cards as I had so much success with them when working on French grammar. Yes, there are a million and one drawbacks to using them compared to those on a computer programme. For the moment its working and I am happy to continue with them. In learning new words, reading has been more of a success than Anki in the last few months, so I am going to stick with lots of reading and a dictionary. Reading: After saying that.... my reading has taken a bit of a nosedive recently. Haven't been in the mood (oh the drama =P) for comics and books or magazines felt like too much. Instead I have been listening (passively and actively) to the radio and reading/watching NHK easy. On a side note for reading, I picked up a Japanese game I had bought and played only briefly about 8 months ago. To my surprise and delight, it is far far easier to understand than before. Its nice to see progress from time to time when one is banging one's head against the wall. (I am still not brave enough to return to playing Nobunaga's Ambition) Grammar: As in the previous post にほんご５００問 N5-4 has been a great way to target problem areas in my understanding. Although it feels like there are far too many holes in this particular dam. =P I'm just slowly working on it. Some has gone in and stayed there (simple present vs continuous), others need revising (verb conjugations) and there are many more mysteries to solve. The paper flash cards have been a great tool. I will need constant practice to get these points into long term memory. Which brings me to another point. Returning to Lang-8 has been at the back of my mind for months now. Several members of this forum have kindly recommended it to me (as do I for other learners). However, I just can't seem to bring myself to do it. Which is a little mad on my part as it is such a fantastic tool. But I am really not a writer in that sense of the word. If my writings don't have any purpose, be it to communicate or in an article, I just can't gather up the interest to write frequently. So I will need more talking time with my tutor or a language partner *or* I need to find another way to write. (and I'm not that bothered with social media..... I am very difficult aren't I? =P) JLPT: I have decided to sit the N4 rather than the N3 this July. I am a little disappointed as I had the N3 in mind for the last 10 months or so. However my mistakes in the grammar sections of にほんご５００問 N5-4 (which are below N3) are systematic and thorough. I simply cannot cover that much grammar (n5 to N3) in 6 weeks for N3. I would rather have a firmer foundation in basic grammar before charging ahead. Also I would like to have something to show, c.v. speaking, for the last year's work. French: Not much really. I usually listen to a bit of music or read a few comics. Nothing worth mentioning in detail really. --- I also have some work coming up in both of my target languages. Nothing serious mind, and I was honest(!), but its yet another good motivator! =D 1 person has voted this message useful |
