@yuhakko: The song you posted sounds very similar to the style of songs you find in a
lot of anime opening/ending songs, and one example I can remember off the top of my head would be an ending for Naruto Shippuuden. I really like it! I can't really say that my situation has been opposite to yours, but when I started out with Japanese I was really hooked onto pop songs, and that eventually made way into J-rock. I still, however, listen to and really enjoy pop music, and in this recent discussion of musical tastes, I realized that it's not the pop songs that I don't like, it's some of the pop idol groups that seem to really have no musical talent, and rely on looks or what have you to promote their music. It's because that I got fed up at some point that I turned to different genres, and somehow found J-rock. It's weird because, when I was a little girl, rock to me sounded like a bunch of screamos, and pop was the coolest thing ever. But I learned to be accepting of and willing to try different genres. Hello kyukumber! I'm not currently active with Russian and Hungarian since I want to
focus more on Japanese, and start Korean sometime during the second half of the year if things go more or less well. I haven't abandoned them, I just want to focus on the East Asian languages for now. And hey, post away! Wow, kyukumber, that's a staggering selection of music that'll probably keep me busy
for the entire year! Thank you so much! I truly appreciate it. Not active in my case means generally not sticking to a certain schedule or target with the languages. Like I said, I haven't abandoned them, and I will read or do something, but it's more like maintenance of what I already know rather than achieving any sort of measurable progress. So I will go over whatever little I've covered in Russian and Hungarian, just to keep it fresh in my mind, but if I do something new, it wouldn't be with any consistency. I do plan on getting back to them eventually. I just realized that I do better currently focusing only on one language and getting somewhere with it first before tackling a second. Japanese has always been, and always will be, my passion, so I really want to give it the attention it deserves. I also have been wanting to do Korean and Mandarin for sometime, so I don't want to keep them on the back-burner any longer. It may also be because of my limited available time for studying languages. Maybe after I finish what needs to be done regarding school would I have some more time to dedicate to another language, who knows. So, it's been some time since I last updated. The bipolar, freezing, irregular weather has been on all week, but thankfully we had it off from work
due to the unstable conditions. The two weeks before that, well, it was real hectic at work. I managed to do something everyday in Japanese, although not as structured or continuous as I 'd like for it to be. Ok, so I've picked flumpool's Haru Kaze song for the February team challenge, and basically what I'm doing with this is breaking it up in chunks, and working everyday on that section intensively. Of course I'm listening to the entire song and looping it, but the intensive work mainly involves part of the song. So, I look up unknown words, and simply read and re-read the verse (without the audio) until I get a feel for how the sentence works and what it means. So far, it hasn't been as difficult as I had expected it to be, so I'm guessing I'll probably do another song, since I'm done with this one. I still have to push myself to open Anki, but I wanted to use it to cloze certain parts of the lyrics and thus get myself more actively engaged, and also to practice kanji readings and recognition. I also want to get myself in the habit of using Anki for a couple of months and seeing how effective it can be in boosting my acquisition. I realized I've never really given it much of a chance beyond a few days, so never really had the chance to see the long-term effects. I'll try to be fair this time. I'll try. I am still reading, but I've fallen behind in my numbers compared to the January Tadoku challenge. That's why I need more Tadoku contests in my life, updating my page count and seeing how others are doing has been a huge motivation booster. Anyway, I changed up my reading a bit to involve more intensive reading. It's not a look-up-every-word-and-structure-and-toss-it-in-my-SRS type of intensive, but it more of a pause-and-notice kind. Like, I would read a sentence, and try to notice collocations, why specific particles are used rather than others, and if there's a unique word or structure, I try to keep an eye out for it as I read and see it's placement in the sentence, and indications for it's usage. I read slowly at first, then I go back to rereading it again, faster this time, and I try to read as fast as I can while understanding the sentence on the fly without translating in my head. There's nothing novel about this, but when I was read extensively, I mostly look for the general meaning or gist of the text, without pondering it's specific details. Also reading more intensively than this is too slow and demotivating for me. I don't remember most of the words immediately afterwards anyway, so I don't even try anymore to worry about it. I still read extensively, but the problem that I found I had was that while I could understand the general meanings, I'm unable to make something similar like it myself, even though the sentences can be extremely simple. I'm not obsessing over output, really, but I also think it'd be kind of nice, being able to say a few lines or think in the language without having to think too much about it, simply just for the motivation. I then read this post on Antimoon and it hit home. The problems they describe were exactly what I've been experiencing. So I decided to give their suggestions a try, just pause, notice, and think briefly before moving on, and I feel already that I'm improving. I've been doing that these past few weeks and now I feel sentences, complex ones, are coming to me more easily, and this all has been very encouraging. I can't explain it, it's like, if I have a thought, it comes out more easily in Japanese now, rather than in English. I also try to, occasionally, reproduce a sentence I read and thought about from memory, I try to say it out loud, and then repeat it faster until I don't make a mistake. Of course I do all of that after I've checked the audio to make sure my pronunciation is accurate, but I have a pretty good feel for how the words are pronounced now, so I don't worry about the audio as much as I used to. Reading like that all the time would be slow and time consuming, so I still read extensively for content. A middle road is always good. I also attribute my improvement to the consistency which I'm trying so hard to keep up with. I just make sure to do anything in Japanese everyday. I'm trying not to be too strict on finishing things systematically, letting go, and trusting that the material will come back. Mixing up things has been interesting and refreshing. On to TV. I've been following Gakkou no Kaidan since it aired, and I'm really liking it. It's centered around the student council president in a school full of bullies (rich ones), and shady teachers. Kamiki Ryunosuke's character is really interesting, and I also like the plot a lot, although the speeches made by the 生徒会長 near the end of every episode drag on a bit. I think I've mentioned before that I get my subs from D-Addicts, but I have recently been going on to JP Subbers for the Japanese subs. It's layout is similar to, but cleaner than, Kitsunekko for anime, and you get to download the audio or read it as an HTML document, which is very handy to use with Rikaisama. I usually switch between English and Japanese definitions. I used to watch and read the subs simultaneously, but now I simply just read the subs as if I would read a book, try to infer meaning from context and my knowledge of the show, look up icky words that keep showing up without necessarily having to save them or memorize them or anything, then I play the episode and listen attentively without reading anything. Reading the subs beforehand boosted my comprehension of the episode and made me focus on the structure of the dialogue, intonations and body language, which is all very familiar to me, and just simply enjoying the drama. I know who will say what, I have an expectation of what's coming, so I focus on the dialogue and replay favorite scenes, pretending I'm the character and saying it out loud, just like them. I just do that for a few minutes, randomly, if I find a scene I particularly like. It's also a lot of fun! I haven't read any manga or books the past few weeks and have just been reading random articles online, drama subs, and Twitter, but I do want to get back to the books again. I have Ao no Futsumashi/Ao no Exorcist, Code:Breaker, Kamisama Hajimemashita, and Shingeki no Kyojin lined up. I was surprised to find a second season of Kamisama Hajimemashita airing, a happy surprise, because I love the manga to death. I liked the first season better, but I hated the ending (it was different than the manga), so I was glad to see that they got things back on track again, although they still are leaving some things out. Now if only they can fix up things for Noragami.... On a whim today I found myself watching Ring 0: Birthday (Sadako's story). I don't know why I did, probably during some random drama search, but decided to go through with it because Nakama Yukie was playing Sadako. Yukie is one of my favorite actresses ever since Gokusen, the first I've watched for her, and I like imitating her speech and accent a lot. She's one of my adoptive parents, ala Khatzumoto. Anyway, the film wasn't scary at all, more like creepy, and boy, Sadako sure got a lot of hate from the people around her. I can't imagine being in her shoes, but then again, she brutally killed a lot of people, no doubt a consequence of how she's been treated. I can't say I blame the people who feared her when she was alive, though. She WAS creepy, and weird things happened when she was around. Anyway, I first watched The Ring in its English version (with Naomi Watts), and apart from the sudden scare scenes, which were creepy but kind of funny afterwards, I wasn't really a huge fan of it. Of course, the American production made sure to make Sadako look as scary as hell :) It was interesting seeing the story from a Japanese perspective, though, since this is the original country of The Ring, and I half-expected it to be cheesy as other horror movies, but it was decent. I think. Still not the biggest fan. Why am I talking about The Ring? Anyway, I miss Gaki no Tsukai, and plan on watching a watchable episode (under an hour, their Batsu games run crazy long hours) this week, hopefully if time allows. I'll try to keep up the pace, and won't really change anything for a while, since it's very hectic at work and wih studying. I really enjoyed the unexpected break and wished it was longer :( Oh well. Four more weeks till spring break, not too bad. Stats: TV/Listening Time: 7 episodes of Gakkou no Kaidan, 46ish minutes each, so something like 3.5 movies. (I need to keep up the count for the Super Challenge). Plus one movie, Ring 0. Reading count: Not pages, as I have been reading subs, but for each episode, the subs were roughly around 600 lines. so 4200 subtitles in all. Team Challenge: 2/12 completed. So, just a little update, because I'm still in the TAC, and haven't abandoned my log.
I'm currently busy getting ready for 3 very big exams in May and June, so I haven't been doing any active studying with Japanese, apart from watching a few anime episodes here and there to unwind in between study sessions. If anyone hasn't watched Barakamon, I suggest giving it a try. It's a slice of life comedy, and incredibly heart-warming. Leaves you with that fuzzy, "feel good" feeling. Or it's probably just me. But it's definitely hilarious. Earlier, I watched Kiseijuu (Parasite) and I thought it was incredible. It was a horror genre anime, and the style will remind you a bit of the 80s/90s (the manga ran between '88-'95, I believe) but it has definitely been touched up a bit and is a step up in art from the original, at least in my opinion. The anime is recent (2014) so you want be watching anything old. I liked it a lot. There were a couple of scenes, ahem, that were sort of uncomfortable but funny, but overall, it was a good anime. On the drama front, I have watched a few episodes of Code Blue. I need the motivation to get through this. Although medical dramas always have, and always will be, in-your- face corny. This one is good, but....the world of medicine is extremely overrated. Not that I'm complaining or anything :) So not much overall, but at least some listening is happening. As is of course, music.
