The course begins introducing the alphabet in the second lesson. It has approximate transliterations beginning with the first lesson, though it would be helpful to know the alphabet going in. So what does 101, 105 and 207 refer to in the Princeton Russian course? Here's a brief summary taken from Princeton's Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures for anyone's who's interested:
RUS 101 - Beginner's Russian I "The objective of RUS101 is to give a basic knowledge of Russian. All aspects of introductory grammar are thoroughly presented in this course, with emphasis on conversation throughout the term." Additional reading list: Richard Robin, Karen Evans-Romaine, Galina Shatalina, Joanna Robin. Golosa (book 1, 4th ed.; textbook & student activities manual) Prentice Hall, 2006. SLA 105 - Intermediate Russian "Major emphasis on the development of vocabulary and oral expression with continuing work on difficult grammar topics. Vocabulary thematically organized to include such topics as self and family, education, work, human relationships, politics, and national attitudes. Includes practice on the etiquette of common social situations. Vocabulary reinforced through film and the reading of classical and contemporary fiction and history." Additional reading list: F.Miller, O. Kagan, V. Puti , Russian Grammar In Context. SLA 207 - Advanced Russian Reading & Conversation "A literature/language course designed to further develop speaking and reading proficiency, comprehension and writing skills through substantial expansion of vocabulary, work on sentence structure, review of selected grammar topics, discussion of the literary texts, and work with a movie "Ironiia sud'by"." I'm guessing "RUS 101" is so named because it's the introductory course in Russian (RUS). The number 101 is frequently given to beginner courses in the American system. It seems that the other courses are not under Russian but under Slavic (SLA), for some reason. And since there are more than one Slavic language, the "missing" numbers are presumably used by non-Russian Slavic languages.
