I only know three - described briefly below.
I'd be really interested to hear if anyone knows of any more good ones...
www.mylanguageexchange.com
- well established
- $6 fee allows you to contact other members (for one month)
- this sends an email to them, so you don't have to wait for them to log in
- you can list yourself without paying a fee
www.polyglot-learn-language.com
- perhaps less well established
- french-based
- user interface is a bit clunky
- no fee, but premium membership (unsure of cost) puts you at the top of search results
- some members post their email addresses
- some annoying web adverts
http://www.friendsabroad.com
I only just looked at this. It seems to be free and a bit more professional than polyglot, but - perhaps because of the name and an emphasis on posting members pictures - seems to attract more people interested in dating agency services.

How do you use such websites? Is there anyone here who tried that type of service?

You can either
a) post details of yourself - mainly your native tongue, & target languages. Then see if anyone contacts you - you may get an email via the site or a PM when you next log in
or
b) PM people on the site, or email the brave ones who've posted their email addresses
When you've found someone you can meet them - preferable by far - or use email, chat or internet voice chat. I recently found someone this way.
If your mother tongue's popular, you could probably set up a whole week or two of language exchange before going to visit a country using these websites!

I just have to make a correction about Polyglot-Learn-Language, onebir: When a member receives a message from another one, he also receives a message on his e-mail to notify him.

Hmm - I don't seem to get one, and I've had a few messages & filled in the email field... Plus one of the people who PM'd me apologized for taking so long because she hadn't logged on to that website for a long time. (But maybe I misunderstood the PM - it was in chinese). Anyway, I'm onebir there too, so you can try PMing me!

I'll do that. Perhaps you should check in case your e-mail Inbox puts Polyglot messages into the undesired mail box.

I also used the polyglot-learn-language service. Their chatroom is quite interesting, with discussions in different languages.
I have posted a profile there for a long time. It's hard to find someone who can really continue a correspondance with you. I left my email there and lots of 16-20 French girls keep adding me on MSN but never talk to me.
And yes, they do send you an email when someone sends a message through the system.

OK - I stand corrected on the "emails from polyglot issue" - looks like it was a corporate firewall issue.
