Yeah, I agree with you that they shouldn't use any English in the drills.

I just found mp3s of the first 17 lessons of Assimil Latin!

You can access them by going to this site!

http://www.latinitatis.com/latinitas/menu_gb.htm

Or, more specifically, the text is available on gif format and the recordings are available here.

I've also answered my own questions: The pronunciation is heavily accented in French and it is in Classical pronuncation.

Now if only I knew how to read in French ;)

Referring back to the first page of this thread, I'm wondering a couple of things about this French-based Assimil Latin. Do you need to speak french to get something from it, and does it matter that the audio is in an extremely strong french accent? Still worth working with or not?

I haven't used it much at all, primarily because of the strong French accent. You may want to click on the links and find out for yourself :)

This site has, among other things, podcasts based on a conversational Latin textbook by Adler written in the 19th century. You can access the book through googlebooks and it looks pretty good, but the problem is that one page out of every eight or so is badly scanned and is almost completely illegible.

Hi tmesis,

I've been commenting about Latinum on this particular thread ;)

Actually, I've made a transcript of the first three lessons (both English and Latin), though I really don't know if the podcasts are really effective or not. Since the Latin is not spoken in a particular context, it is a bit difficult for me to use it as a main source for learning. In other words, every bit of latin that is spoken is merely recitations of various phrases. It is not presented in some kind of meaningful context like a story or even a made up dialog (though there is a little bit of that in the podcasts). I pretty much use it for pronunciation and listening purposes.

Google has now rescanned the book.http://www.google.co.uk/books?id=GJgAAAAAYAAJ
The Latinum Podcast has now reached chapter 40 of Adler, and has had over 650 000 audio file downloads.

The list of Latin resources held by Johan Winge is very useful:

Jasonchoi,

Adhuc latine loqui discis? Quomodo te habes?
(Are you still learning Latin? How is it going?)

There is a course at http://avitus.alcuinus.net/schola_latina/ratio.php that works in either English or Spanish using the Assimil Latin Sans Peine book. I have been taking it now over a year (I am in the second part) and while it's a little hard to keep up at times with life getting in the way, it's quite a rewarding experience to reach the point where everything is being communicated in Latin, as the second half of the course is done.
