Cyrillic alphabet is beautiful, practical and clever. I am a big fan.
But I wonder how this alphabet come about? Before or after Latin? Why do some Cyrillic letters appear like mirror images or "false friends" of Latin letters? However I hate it when the Russian letters are used "for decoration" such as using "ya" instead of "R" ! For example: Right next to my house is a bar called "Vodka Revolution" which uses this type of dodgy "fake Russian" spelling. It's even got some kind of mock-Communist theme... Too cheesy! Both Latin and Cyrillic came from the Greek alphabet, the Cyrillic one came about much later. Wikipedia will tell you more ;)

When I first got started with Russian I learned about the Cyrillic alphabet's Greek origins. The Russian N "Н" confused me because that's what the Greeks use for one of their E's. The rest were OK.

Oh, my. This is one of my favourite flaming topics. The original Slavic alphabet (with Greek origins) was the Glagolic. It was developed by St. Cyril and Methodius in an effort to differentiate from the Latin script used by the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) empire. At that time the Empire was 'the enemy' exerting significant cultural influence. The development of a new alphabet was an act of defiance. The Cyrillic alphabet is a heavily modified (and simplified) version of the Glagolic script. Multiple theories exist as to its origin but most researchers agree that it was developed in the literary school of Preslav (the capital of the second Bulgarian kingdom; nowadays a picturesque city with a ruined fortress nearby). If you deem me biased, refer to the Russian wikipedia:
"...The appearance of Cyrillic, which can be traced back to Greek origins, in that case can be attributed to the Bulgarian literary tradition (sequential to [the work of] Cyril and Methodius). In particular, in the memoires of Clement of Ohrid it is directly mentioned that Cyrillic was created only after the work of Cyril and Methodius." Cheers.
