For Croatian it's also Bosnian and Montenegrin (sp?). And this situation has both advantages and disadvantages, I think - you'll be understood but it might be more of a challenge to understand other "zones" of the dialect continuum.
Liking the sound of a language is very important, yes. But as for resources, I think from these ones only Russian has more than Polish.

From what I understand, standard Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin are virtually the same language (from a linguistic perspective). There's not much of a dialectal continuum there. Serbian is very close to it - the main difference being a different pronunciation of the yat - e/i/ije. The alphabet is different for Serbian (Cyrillic), but otherwise, there's not much more difference between them than there is between - say - standard American and Canadian English.

That being said, there are political and ethnic issues involved, which is why they are called different things.

Serpent I am ready for you to change my Slavic language. And I choose *drum role*

-Russian!-
I love how it sounds and I also realize there are more resources and it is a more used
language. I will henceforth commence my studying for 2012!

Done!
aw, great<3 there's a lot of stuff you can find for free:))))
as Barry Farber put it, don't tell the Poles, but they would have a far less confusing writing system if they used cyrillics XDDD

Good luck:)

Does anybody have any experience with Lusatian/Sorbian/Wendish? This is the slavic language I want to learn. I understand most of the written text, but it is hard to understand when it is spoken (but I have found only few samples).

Hižo w lěće 1319 naspomni so mjeno Oztrow. Wjeska wupřestrěwa so wot lěweho brjoha Klóšterskeje wody hač horje ke Kopcam, po blišej wokolinje derje widźomnym wjeršku.

It is so cute! It reminds me of older forms of the Czech language.

Hi Serpent et al.,

Sorry for being so very late to the party, please add me in!

My goals are...

Slavic: Russian, thanks to reading Dostoevsky when I was 15. I have been studying seriously for three months before Christmas and would like to achieve a strong communicative level (let's say, A2) this year, you know, where I can name things around the house, be of use when there is a need for a Russian speaker, and so on. I would push it further but...

Romance: ... I am once again starting serious study of French. I plan to make this language second nature and will hopefully make a semi-permanent move to France this year. Great literature here, as well.

Special mentions go out to:
Spanish - my first foreign language - where is the love?
Irish - wanderlustre extraordinaire - I will be back.
Croatian - ?
