Joining! I already speak Spanish so I will be doing ASL as my challenge. I am in my first semester of ASL in college
and hope to become an interpreter. I have an A in class but have been seriously slacking and never practice. I
definitely need the intensive study time and this seems like the perfect way to get me on track. I am not familiar
with how Twitter works but I hope I'll be able to figure it out. Yay!

Hey guys, I'm in! With Thai as target. But I need some info about the bot and how to
track the time, I'm neither familiar with this forum or tweeter! Please shine some light
in here...
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi JNetto,
If you want to get more information on the bot, then you can check that out on this link (click).
Hopefully that helps. :D

Thanks for the link, but I already checked all that information. What I want to know
is: Is the "bot" an automated system that counts our posts and time messages or it just
receives the messages and posts them on the tweeter page?
THanks,
Jeff

The robot only pays attention to messages directed its way on Twitter, i. e. any
Twitter message that includes @6WCBot somewhere (needn't be at the start). It even
ignores all the messages that reach it except for two types of messages:
- those that include "#reg", for registration
- those that come from registered people and include a language tag like #German,
#Deutsch, #de or #deu. In these tweets, it will look for words describing time, e. g.
"1 minute", "23 minutes", "1 hour", "2 hours", "90min" or any combination of these. It
converts the time into minutes and adds that to your score for the language.
Additionally, it will remember any arbitrary tag you use, like #Anki or #TeachYourself
or #reading or ANYTHING - it won't understand what these mean, but it generates
statistics for you to tell you how much time you spent #reading this month, etc.
In response to somebody submitting a registration, the bot confirms that the
registration was successful (or not).
In response to somebody submitting a score, the bot posts a message on Twitter telling
everyone about that person's new rank and score. The score is also updated at
http://6wc.learnlangs.com/ because that page
draws on the same database as the bot.
To see the confirmation messages, you have to click "Follow" at
http://www.twitter.com/6WCBot or look in the "Mentions" tab of your Twitter
stream of news.
The bot does not know what is going on at HTLAL and will not be able to use anything
you post in this thread or in your language log. If you want your score to be updated,
you need to go to http://www.twitter.com and use the
"What's happening?"
text box to post something along the lines of
.@6WCBot Today I spent 34 minutes surfing #websites in #Spanish. Check out
www.duolingo.com !
or
.@6WCBot 34min #Spanish
The latter is the minimum information necessary. The former is more wordy in order to
make things more interesting for fellow HTLAL members who may be reading these updates.
If Spanish is your declared target language for the month, the above message will earn
you +34 points for your overall score AND +34 points for your target score. If Spanish
is not your declared target language, it will only earn you +34 points on the overall
score. Essentially, the site allows us to see who
worked the most on his target language and who worked the most on all languages - human
nature is such that that should nudge you to spend more time on languages. As for the
effectiveness, the results obtained through that work, it's difficult to compare,
though we can try to do it here on the forum.

Very nice challenge. I myself have a German test coming up in 12 days (and an oral in 5
...) so would benefit nicely from this. Sign me up :)
Sorry it's not Spanish. I'd happily do that another month though as my girlfriend speaks
quite a bit of it.

The Challenge is upon us... in Asia it's already past midnight and we have the
first submissions to the bot. As soon as it's 0:00am on May 1st in your place, you can
start counting your hours and improving your rank. Let's rumble!!!
