Right now I'm working through the beginning of Ultimate Italian, but I'm planning on ordering Assimil
soon (hopefully today). I probably won't get started with it for at least another few weeks, though. But we can still motivate each other even if we aren't on the same lesson! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I haven't finished the first chapter yet, but I read four or five chapters ahead out of curiosity and it looks pretty
good to me. I don't think it's by any means a comprehensive grammar book, but it should give me a good foundation to work from (and of course I'll be using Assimil too). I completed Ultimate Spanish a few years ago and I really liked it, so I'm hoping Ultimate Italian will be just as good! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

The first week of the year was nothing worth writing about. This update is for the week
of January 7 - 13th. Italian Study Time: 8 hours and 55 minutes Immersion: 1 hour and 42 mins Except for 24 mins of Scriptorium and my attempt at speaking Italian becoming an impromptu 30-minute lesson all my study time this week went to Paul Noble. I was very excited to use the Paul Noble course as I figured it would be an easy way to "change various English words into Italian ones so that, by using this very simple tool, you can quickly develop an Italian vocabulary of several thousand words" as the course promises. I'm happy to say that the first 5 CDs delivered as promised. Unfortunately CDs 6 and 7 were entirely review. It was also very disappointing that the person answering Paul in Italian was very obviously not a native speaker as I thought they used native speakers for this system. My immersion went mostly to watching episodes Winx Club in Italian and reading a few pages of Twilight and Read & Think in Italian. Croatian Study time: 8 hours and 25 minutes - 3 hours and 43 mins of Anki review and creating new cards - 1 hour and 18 mins of Pimsleur (3 lessons) - 1 hour and 19 mins of Scriptorium - 1 hour and 40 mins of In-Flight Croatian (phrasebook with audio) Immersion: 5 hours and 37 minutes - 7 episodes of Weeds in English with Croatian subtitles - 2 episodes of Lud, Zbunjen, Normalan in Croatian (no subs) - 105-minute long movie Gori Vatra in Croatian with English subtitles. Except for In-Flight Croatian this week was all immersion and review. I only have a few chapters left of Teach Yourself Croatian so all this review was necessary. I love watching TV shows in English with Croatian subtitles, it doesn't feel like studying and I'm learning as much vocabulary as I would by doing a TY chapter. Maybe I should start counting it as studying instead of immersion :) Starting this coming Thursday I'm gonna have a Croatian native speaker staying with me for a few weeks to possibly a couple months. So I expect a lot of my Croatian study time is gonna go into conversation and asking questions, which helps me learn much faster and retain what I learn. There will also be a lot of cleaning before his arrival, so I don't have any lofty goals for this coming week. Arabic Study time: 9 hours and 5 minutes - 4 hours and 28 minutes of Colloquial Arabic of Egypt (about 2 chapters) - 28 minutes of Alif Baa - 52 minutes of Anki review and creating new cards - 46 minutes of Scriptorium - 2 hours and 32 mins of Pimsleur (5 lessons) Immersion: 3 hours and 8 minutes - 31 minutes listening to Nogu FM (interviews and music) - 38 minutes one episode of Rayan (old Egyptian drama)in Arabic, no subs - 33 minutes of Egyptian movie White Rose in Arabic with English subtitles - 86-minute long Palestinian movie Rana's Wedding in Arabic with English subtitles. I almost got a little too resource happy with Arabic, but I'm really enjoying Colloquial Arabic of Egypt so I'm not gonna do any other textbooks until I'm done with it. My Arabic script leaves a lot to be desired (not a surprise given how bad my script is in the Latin alphabet) so I'm gonna have to go back to work on just forming the letters as opposed to just learning how to read. That's another thing I like about Colloquial Arabic of Egypt, although the lessons are all in romanised Arabic there's a script supplement at the back of the book which is what I'm using for scriptorium and helping me with my reading. But I'm still in the sounding out letters stage of "reading". This coming week I expect to do more of what I did this past week, with MT replacing Pimsleur and definitely more Anki review and creating new flashcards to hopefully reach the 12-hour mark. I like your idea of watching English TV shows with TL subtitles. I tried doing this with French but I'm probably too advanced and didn't really profit a lot. I want to try it with my beginner languages though, as soon as I find some subtitled shows. I hope the extra attention I have to pay to the audio as a non-native English speaker won't spoil the effect.
How are you liking"Twilight"? I started reading it a few days ago in Swedish and it seems pretty easy and enjoyable (language-wise, not story-wise :)). 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I actually got the idea from Kerrie and Danac, but definitely an idea worth borrowing!
English language DVDs usually only bring English, Spanish and French subtitles so I need to have the shows and TL subtitles downloaded onto my computer. You can download them from http://www.allsubs.org I've actually thought about downloading Italian subtitles for Shrek 3 in Croatian which I've watched about 7 times. But that idea will have to wait a few months. Twilight it's great for language learning. I've noticed that I need to understand very little of the vocabulary to understand what's going on. Which is great for extensive reading. I can't imagine reading this in English or in Spanish though, no way. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Thanks for the link. It seems that Swedish subtitles are not that easy to find (Swedes probably speak English to well) but I'll definitely look up some shows.
I have the same impression, I was truly surprised how many words I coud figure out based on the context or because of cognates, and I'm actually able to read it without a dictionary with my beginner Swedish. And the author was nice enough to have described many beginner topics (talking about weather, your room, what people look like etc.) on first few pages ;P. The only problem I can see is that I seriously doubt I would be able to read it again in order to learn another language ;). 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Johanna,
I'm curious what your opinion is between the Paul Noble course and the Michel Thomas course. I've heard they are very similar. Would you recommend one over the other? (not that either would ever release a Persian version anyway :) ) 1 person has voted this message useful |
