Anki = 4550
Hours Studied = 47 (Total: 1230) My Anki deck is slowly maturing, very slowly. I've barely added anything new recently, and let suspended cards stay in suspension but even so, it's taking longer than I thought to bring this beast under control. Making good progress with Colloquial Polish. I have finished Lesson 18 (Conditionals, Reflexive Pronouns, Letter Writing) and Lesson 19 (Adverbial Participles). So that leaves just Lesson 20 to complete, afterwhich I have about 7 other general workbooks to choose from. I plan to work through them all even though they are basic-intermediate, simply to glean new insights by repetition and to reinforce what I already know. Some of them I'll whizz through quite quickly. Then I have B2-C1 workbooks focussing on particular points of grammar, books of sample sentences to practise translation and some audio course material. Throw in the internet and a dozen unread novels and I'll be happily occupied for next year and beyond. I've been listening to at least 2 podcasts daily, in addition to my daily dose of Samo Życie. Thank goodness for Radio Trojka, there's so much to enjoy. Let's see, what did I listen to in the past few days? Well I might as well list a few! - A few interviews with politicians on Salon polityczny A book about the priest-poet Jan Twardowski. Palative care in Polish Hospitals A polish bookshop in Lithuania Ugly Architecture Exhibition of Medieval Art Spanish Colony in Africa Mr. Cogito a creation by the poet Zbigniew Herbert Mtyhology for Children 'The Winter War' between the USSR and Finland in 1939. No 'Words of the Week', sorry. Got a ton of stuff to do before my regular study plan gets obliterated by the prolonged 'festivities' about to descend. Sometimes I wish I could disappear between 20th-31st December, or maybe get myself arrested and smuggle a Polish grammar into jail..... Hey Mooby, so I read the Polish team will be discontinuing next year. You'll still be hanging around though and

All the best with your languages, by what I've noticed you seem to have worked really hard, and (unlike me) actually written in them. What are those other workbooks? Anything you can comment on or recommend already? A few weeks ago, I splashed out on a few workbooks as well. I ordered them from universitas and had them within a week. I've bought - Gramatyka? Dlaczego nie? and Ależ tak! - Jak to łatwo powiedzieć - Ach, ten język polski - Czas na czasownik - Iść czy jechać The first four are pretty basic which makes for rewarding study sessions :) The other two had already been in my possession but I think I've given them away a few years ago. I've also rummaged through the boxes full of language books I store at my parents' house and found a few more Polish books from the olden times and brought them back to work with. I just started reading one containing short essays written by normal Poles about German-Polish relations ten years after the fall of the Berlin wall, a topic (highly asymmetrical cross-border relations, that is) which never fails to fascinate me. Here's what I've got: Basic Workbooks 1. Colloquial Polish (1995 edition). I like this one a lot, it has clear explanations and loads of useful example sentences to illustrate grammar. 2. Colloquial Polish (2008 edition). Dialogue based. I prefer the older edition. 3. Polish in 4 weeks (BOOK 1). Dialogue, grammar and vocabulary sections. 4. Polish in 4 weeks (BOOK 2). Next level, covers B1. 5. Teach Yourself Polish (M.Corbridge-Patkaniowska 1992). 41 units revolving around points of grammar. 6. A New Polish Grammar (J.A.Teslar 1941). Lots of Polish-only dialogues and texts. 7. Hurra po polsku 1. Colourful but a bit too unstructured for me. Audio 1. Teach Yourself Polish Conversation (J.Michalak-Gray). 3 hours, 20 dialogues. Basic tourist type material. 2. Michel Thomas Advanced. 5 hours audio lessons Bilingual Sentences for Translation 1. Verb Forms in Bilingual Exercises (Stanisław Kaczmarski). 2. Słownik Konwersacyjny Języka Angielskiego (P.Ratajczak + N.Harvey-Smith) 4500 sentences. 3. Gramatyka Polska w Dialogach (Janina Wójtowicz + Leszek Szkutnik) 1852 mini dialogues Advanced / Specialised 1. Iść czy Jechać (Józef Pyzik) 2. Czas na czasownik (Piotr Garncarek). B2 3. Przygoda z gramatyką (Józef Pyzik) B2-C1 As you can see I also have a few of the Universitas books, but I haven't started them yet. I plan to use the bilingual sentence books systematically next year, in order to get a grip on syntax. What are your study plans for 2014? Plans can change, but here's what I'm doing and planning to continue to do: I've fired up Anki again and am working through the workbooks. Then I've got tons of books to read extensively, and I try to listen to one or a few podcasts most days. I can't commit 5 hours per day as you do, but I still see progress with the 60-90 minutes I spend. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Similar to me! Except that I must do more writing.
Podcasts are great; you can practise both reading (the short introduction that usually accompanies the podcast) and listening. With a huge range of topics to choose from, listening to podcasts is never boring, quite the contrary. They're usually short enough (about 15 mins) to be able to maintain concentration, but still have time to get attuned. Occasionally I'll skip something when the people are either speaking incredibly fast or indistinctly. Otherwise, podcasts are my favourite learning material. Yes, I was doing 5 hours a day for a season, but the average is just over 3. Over Christmas I'll be lucky if I manage a single hour. Maybe the break will do me good? Excellent news! No, this year was really quite the failure language wise for me, but fully intend to lift my game come
January. Any chance you'd be able to share some of the podcasts you're most fond of? I don't really have anything in the way of Polish podcasts and would love to have a selection there waiting for me when I finally get back to Polish, as I use podcasts heavily in my language learning also. 1 person has voted this message useful |
