Pretty much anything on Radio Trójka is good for practise.
You can select from a range of categories on the drop-down bar. I incline towards culture and reportage, but have been recently listening to more science and political podcasts in order to improve my vocab in these areas. Economics is probably the only thing I'd not bother with, at least not for the time being. Along with those listed above (message 121), I will continue to share anything that's interesting (but they all are!) or, due to speed and clarity, has been really useful for listening practise. Ahh, found it!
I was searching for a podcast I listened to a couple of days ago; an interview with the veteran broadcaster Anna Retmaniak. It turns out that I listened to it on the sister station, Radio Jedynka. What I like about it, is her clear steady enunciation. And she's not jabbering away at 1000 words a minute. Admittedly, her voice wavers occasionally, but I found the conversation comfortable to follow. In 40 years of broadcasting, she recalls the people she's interviewed and how, by naivety, she could open people up. I've written a few paragraphs on lang-8 recently and always received plenty of corrections within a few hours. Another thing I regularly did with my Thai tutor earlier this year was to summarize texts she'd sent me prior to our sessions. I got this idea from emk, and it was really useful. What's your plan of attack? Are you planning on working with a tutor, and if so, how? Have you tried lang-8? How will you select topics? Well, here's what I'm thinking:
1. Translate sentences and dialogue from English to Polish using excercise books such as Gramatyka polska w dialogach - Wójtowicz / Szkutnik. [To forensically examine all aspects of grammar]. 2. Start a journal, written in Polish of course. [To practise forming more complex personal sentences] 3. Descriptive essays. For example, describe an action, appearance, feeling. Describe it again in a different tense / person. [To practise accuracy] 4. Stream of consciousness. Write about anything that's going on right now, or a thought you want to convey immediately. [To practise spontaneity] Use lang-8 (and nice friends!) to get corrections and feedback. I'd certainly use a tutor for conversation practise, but it never occurred to me to use a professional to help with writing. It's something I'll definitely consider. I like your idea with Thai. At this stage, I don't plan on writing about topics that are of little interest to me e.g law, or require specialised vocabulary. Anki = 4550
Hours Studied = 20 (Total: 1250) As expected, my efforts have tailed off with all the festive goings-on. Added to which I have a cold bunging up my head. I'll wrap up this log with a summary later, but now I'll say that the last week or two has followed the same pattern of listening (radio), Anki reviews (mercifully fewer) and grammar ('Colloquial Polish'). I just have the last lesson of the aforementioned workbook to go, and there's still time to finish it this year if my cold clears up. Words of the Week Zakład - 'plant' (factory, institution, works, research unit) Zakładnik - 'hostage' Zmykać Imperf. - 'to nip off' (somewhere) / pop off / get going. I'm off to work, bye! ('zmykam do pracy, pa!') Podły - 'mean', base', 'lowdown' (shabby behaviour) Szlam - 'sludge' (slimy silt) Poronienie - 'miscarriage', 'stillbirth' Zżyć się Perf. - 'to become accustomed to'. I grew accustomed with this environment ('zżyłem się z tym środowiskiem') Dziewczęcy - 'girl's', 'girlish' Babski - 'woman's', 'womens's. " Babski wieczór " - 'Lady's night' / 'A girl's night out (in)' Babiarz - 'womaniser', (ladies' man) Babka - 'granny'. Also a type of yeast cake with fruit or chocolate. Baba - 'old peasant woman'. 2013 SUMMARY
THE GOOD I studied a lot (1260 hours) and have reached my goals for this year. I'm happiest with my listening improvement. THE BAD I spent too much time building vocabulary (my favourite activity), at the cost of acquiring the grammar skills to meaningfully use it. Writing remains my weakest skill. THE UGLY My caveman-with-a-hangover style of speech. I pity my long-suffering Polish friends! THE STRANGE This tongue twister nearly drove me mad: wstrząśnięty - 'shocked', 'shaken' (by) It's been a great year, better than I expected. One of the things that kept me motivated was the puzzle of Malbork Castle, I look forward to Sundays when I add the pieces that I've earned. Starting from the bottom, I've completed the lake and tangled weeds, and am now at the base of the castle ramparts. In 2014 those ramparts will be breached! Now my listening has improved I'm able to enjoy TV and radio more, and just about stay abreast in conversations. Polish is slowly making sense, and becoming less aboout studying and more about using. There's such a lot of excellent native material to enjoy, especially the arts. Finally, massive thanks to my fellow bisons, my best wishes to you all. Keep plodding! So I'm leaving TAC, but will continue my journey in a new log. 2014 awaits.......
