Sorry, I was on two great teams during this year and I liked how things were organized.
In 2013, we had 18 teams. How on Earth are you supposed to keep track of the names that have been
proposed for your team when 18 teams are throwing in their suggestions into the same thread?
Starting the team thread in December is actually good for organization. You can discuss the name, you get to
know your team mates, you can create links to their logs. I don't know what's wrong about that.
Furthermore, it's up to the teams to decide on their names. Most teams will go for a short, catchy name
anyway, but I don't think it's good to make rules like "four letters tops". And if you find a good name that
happens to have more letters, you should be able to choose it.
As I have already said elsewhere: I understand the desire for efficient organization, but please don't
exaggerate it! |

I agree. In the three years I have participated in the TAC finding a name is half the fun, it creates team spirit
and it gets less messy if it is done by the actual members of a team in their own thread. Did any of the teams
have a problem with this last year?
And not everyone will have the technical know how to participate in a poll in an external site.

Here's an example, nothing difficult, right? It's better than the HTLAL polls, seriously. Now setting up the poll is a tiny bit harder but surely every team has someone who can figure it out? And if not, people from other teams will help.
IDK, in all my teams it's been awkward to actually start TAC'ing after 10 pages of preparations. And it's not only me who said that team threads were started ridiculously early last time.
Maybe it's kinda different for you guys because you celebrate Christmas earlier than me and start preparing for it in September :) I always felt like TAC actually ended in November, and I kinda assumed it bothered others more than it really did (if at all)? I think we should let TAC-2013 run its full course first.
Also, we'll have a whole year for our precious team spirit. How about a general TAC spirit? ♥ I do think that there's not enough TAC talk that's not team-specific, and that hanging out all together is underrated.

Hm. The thing about team spirit is that it is something you need most in the beginning, when many are new to
each other and it is practical for everyone to focus on a common task. I have been to a number of courses in
management and team building through my work, and often we start with the task of creating a name, a team
logo and the leader - just to get us started.
I think a thread like this can be useful in throwing about some names that can be used by the teams as they
assemble, but in the teams I have been on, spending time on finding a team name, leader, song, poem
whatever, among ourselves has been very effective and fun as a kick off thing. It gives us a lot of laughs and
help giving us a good time.

Good for you. In my experience choosing a name is a stressful process that I want to be more transparent and fair.

prospective members of Team Mandarin :)
The past two years the Asian team has held the names “dragon” and “crane”. I don’t pretend to know much about the culture since I just started learning two months ago, but if the new team wants to follow the tradition of using animals might I suggest
鹰 – eagle “strength” (another flying creature)
鹊 – magpie /bird “attracts joy connected to the unity of people” (I like this one not only for the symbolism but it’s also a common bird where I live)
苍鹭 – heron „wishing for positive future, success in ones doing“
大象 - elephant "strength, astuteness"
Of course, I’ll personally need the elephant more for its western symbolism -- the memory of an elephant that is ;)
Baronbill, Ellasevia, Js6426, Ninibo or anyone else have an idea?

Perhaps it was the year of the Dragon that year? I don't think there is a crane in the zodiac, though (however, we have a member with that name).
