I don't mind if we merge.

I'd be better off asking what the whole text means (which I don't).

First of all, it would be nice to know, if those who are still thinking about whether to
become a Viking or not (Jonhello + limey75, both w/Norwegian) have made a decision. Team
#1 has 15 members, Team #2 6 members so far. If Jonhello and limey75 join Team #2, they
will have 8 members there, IMHO enough to "survive".
If there are no other people joining Team #2 by the end of the week, I would suggest to
merge both teams.

Vikings, what is your experience with juggling multiple Scandinavian languages?
|
|

Multiple Scandinavian languages seem to help each other more than they interfere. Interference doesn't matter much for your passive skills (except false friends, but there aren't that many) and I am able to separate them more or less by accent for active skills. When I write Danish, I hear a Danish accent in my head (and for speaking it's obvious), which helps me to separate expressions and spelling from Norwegian, which I write without hearing the words in my head (probably a product of different learning strategies). And then there are spell checkers :)
Swedish is a bit more different, so you should get even less interference.

Since you asked for corrections, here you go. It is actually very well written, so the corrections look worse than they are. I have also written some notes, I probably won't have much time to do that normally, but I have a quiet morning today .-)
1. Jeg BEGYNTE å lære norsk i august.
Notes:
1: You must use the simple past tense because you have specified the time, and you are outside that timeframe (august).
- Jeg har begynt å lære norsk (unspecified)
- Jeg har begynt å lære norsk i dag (specified, but within the same timeframe)
- Jeg begynte å lære norsk i august (specified and outside the timeframe)
2. You can say ANDRE GANG or DEN ANDRE GANGEN, but you cannot combine the two.
3. Set expression
4. EN NY (or when you use the definite - which is not possible in this sentence) DEN NYE
5. Typo :-)
6. Perfect!
7. - You write something FOR someone, and Brazilians must be in plural.
- You can either write "FOR DET FINNES INGEN GODE KURS" (best)or "FORDI DET IKKE FINNES NOEN GODE KURS"
- Either "FOR PORTUGISISKTALENDE", or "MED PORTUGISISK SOM UTGANGSPUNKT/GRUNNSPRÅK"

Å skrive en bokstav man må trykke klaffen mellom 'Alt Gr' og Ctrl og da to andre, for eksempel:
a og * gir å
a og e gir æ
o og / gir ø
o og ~ gir õ
Hvilket onlinet ordbok bruker dere? Jeg bruker eltranslador.com og tritrans.net men jeg er ikke sikker hvis de er de beste ordboka som det er på netten. |

A SMALL NORWEGIAN LESSON - USE OF CAPITAL LETTERS
I still feel a bit hesitant about correcting people's mistakes here, as I do not know how you feel about being corrected in public. I would however mention things that seem to be rather common. One mistake which seems to be common even among native Norwegian speakers, is the use of captal letters.
And the main rule is: If in doubt, do not use capital letters. They are only used when beginning a new sentence, and for proper names for persons or places. No months, week days, languages, nationalities, no nothing. If you see native speakers writing any of those with capital letters, it is because of influence from English, and it is wrong. We even use small letters for words containing a country if it is merged with a different word.
Eks. På mandag sa Judy til meg at hun hadde lyst til å dra til Norge i januar for å lære seg norsk sammen med en franskmann som er en norgesvenn.
On Monday Judy told me that she wanted to go to Norway in January to learn Norwegian together with a Frenchman who is a "Norway-friend". x
x - Cultural note. Norway is a small country with a huge inferiority complex (a number of foreigners asking if Norway is the capital of Sweden and who think Liv Ullmann is Swedish does that to you). We therefore get extatic whenever anyone shows interest in us, by visiting the country often or by talking nicely about us, and we immediately proclaim that they are a "norgesvenn". Particularly if it is someone famous:-)
There, first lesson down. Many more to come :-) |

SECOND VIKING CHALLENGE
Write 3 sentences where you try to use as many of the words which in English are spelled with capital letters, and in Norwegian (and as far as I know also Swedish and Danish) are spelled with regular letters as possible.

Hi,
I'm not on the team but I'm starting to work with Assimil Norwegian and I thought this thread would be a good place to ask my question. I'm looking for an online Norwegian-English dictionary with pronunciation. I did some google search but to no avail. Has anyone found such a thing? I would appreciate any suggestions.
