If you look at my profile at the left side, you'll notice a new addition: that's true, I'm really learning Icelandic. It's not a very 'serious' goal-oriented project but it does seem interesting. More info on my log.

I've tried to learn them both. But to get good active skills in Icelandic is pretty hard, Icelandic is very irregular.

I just had to share this with you. We often speak about dialects in Norway being highly respected, and mostly that is the case. There is however one, where even the locals admit that they sound stupid when they use it, so when they take a higher education, they drop it, thus rendering it more a sociolect than a dialect. Some of the locals find this to be a pity, and as an experiment they will publish an entire edition of the newspaper in the dialect from Fredrikstad - Østfold. This article speaks about it - and it is written in the same dialect. I may add that it is the first time in my life that I have seen this dialect in writing.

Except for a few odd words (different but easily understandable), it seemed pretty normal to me. I can't see why they should seem any dumber than the rest of us.
As for dialects dying out, you see that everywhere. Younger people tend to have a much lighter version of the local dialect than older people. I don't think it's so odd that that should happen. People move around a lot more now than before and there is radio, television and internet. Dialects develop when one group is isolated from another. Now that we aren't isolated, the dialects are more likely to gradually merge together, I think. I've heard also, that it was very usual some years ago to try to change one's dialect if one moved to a classier area. That also happens in the US. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Another little gem is this article about Oslo - which is very flattering. The author is way off on the number of
inhabitants, and when she describes Oslo as sophisticated and talks about the hushed tones people use in bars and restaurants, I think most Norwegians would just snort and think that she has hardly been out on a Saturday evening and that she must have smoked her own socks. It would be nice to have a Viking Skype session again, maybe the next Sunday? What do you think about it? Someone (I think it was stifa) mentioned at my log a popular forum from Norway where we could practice Norwegian while discussing a wide range of subjects. Do you guys know its URL? I can't find it now.
