laban - I kinda like this song :D

Haha! Everyone in Sweden immediately thinks of "Lilla spöket Laban" when they hear your name. It's a famous series of books for small children about a ghost. But the name is not generally given to people right now (although it might make a "comeback") Is it unusual in Israel too?

Folque - Harpa

Gosh, sad but beautiful.... Didn't know about this group.

:) is Casper the Friendly Ghost based on this book series?

btw, my name is not laban, it's just a nick i'm using. my real name is Guy. :)
but laban is a biblical name, though i don't think it's used often due to seemingly low importance of the character in the bible - not sure though, and it also means "white" in hebrew (pronounced slightly different). I myself, never heard of anyone here named laban.

p.s - glad you liked Folque, they got some nice songs.

As Finnish is included in this forum, I would like to introduce some Finnish hip-hop/rap/reggae that I've been listening to lately to get my ears around the pronunciation. I'm a massive music critic and I love this stuff:

Asa (rapper)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlhBOgIFf6I (probably my favourite of his)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoQg8pjfdqA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-Ds0SmAlus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u32vnSNoSPY

Raappana (reggae singer; one comment on his videos "suomalainen Bob Marley" or a Finnish Bob Marley)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkFzJ3CvsXI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9AWc5pjPQI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzEM0rSfDQ8

A collaboration: (excellent chorus)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGHnFIcnVWc

I'll include some Icelandic bands too:

Þursaflokkurinn (little-known progressive rock band from the 1970s who have recently starting playing gigs again (I shared a taxi with them from Akureyri airport and got invited to their gig there last year)):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJ--dACoOtc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYpuf-J8Gx0

Steindór Andersen (rímur ("rhymes") singer who contributed to Sigur Rós's Heima DVD):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gJHUC_HEuA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZUxADofz00 (with Sigur Rós) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qap_JEChc0 is louder but without video)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmOCcefXVrc (again)

Amiina (string quartet/multi-instrumentalists who accompany Sigur Rós on tours often. Normally vocal-less though):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYIDUvAtiGc (Icelandic TV performance)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYrebYg8WWg

Enjoy :)! Sorry this post is in English. My Icelandic nor Finnish are good enough to compose it all in either language.

Great thread! :) I've found that music is one of the best motivators to continue to study a language.

Here's a very depressing Finnish song (especially the video. Oh god the video...):

Zen Café - Piha ilman sadettajaa (A yard without a sprinkler)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve6Rd0G4TK0

Lyrics (with English translation; ※ = refrain):

Jos et sinä enää minusta piittaa, tuulet kääntyy luoteeseen.
If you don't care about me anymore, the winds turn to the northwest
Jos et sinä enää minua kaipaa, joudun yksin vuoteeseen.
If you don't long for me anymore, I'll go to bed alone

Peiton käärin rullaksi, sen asettelen viereeni, kuvittelen että siinä oot.
I'll roll the blanket, put it beside me, imagine that you are there
Aamuyö niin lohduton, sängyssäni yhä on peitto untuvilla täytetty.
The small hours so hopeless, there is still a blanket filled with downs in my bed

※Jos et sinä enää minua tahdo, olen kylmä ja kivinen kaivo.
If you don't want me anymore, I'm a cold and stony well
Piha ilman sadettajaa, sitä minä olen jos sua en saa.
A yard without a sprinkler, that I am if I can't get you
Jos et sinä enää minua huoli, olen puu jonka salama nuoli.
If you don't care about me anymore, I'm a tree that got licked by lightning
Palanut ja revitty maa, sitä minä olen jos sua en saa.
Scorched and torn earth, that I am if I can't get you

Jos et sinä enää minusta täyty, viikko vaihtuu seuraavaan.
If you don't get filled up from me anymore (=If I don't satisfy you anymore), the week changes to the next one
Jos et sinä enää minua toivo, joudun yksin tiskaamaan.
If you don't wish me here anymore, I have to do the dishes alone

Vastaan vaikka kysy et, siirrän puhtaat lautaset kuivauskaappiin alahyllylle.
I reply even when you don't ask, I move the clean dishes to the lower shelf on the cupboard
Aamupäivä laahustaa, täytyy iltaa taluttaa ja laittaa niinkuin vanhus nukkumaan.
The morning drags on, must walk the evening and take it to bed like an old man

Tarvitsen sut, mä tarvitsen sut kun vaiti on pellon multa.
I need you, I need you when the soil of the field is silent
Tarvitsen sut, mä tarvitsen sut kun kelloista loppuu aika
I need you, I need you when the clocks run out of time
ja ahtaana vyöryy ilma.
and the air billows congested

Sitä minä olen jos sua en saa.
That I am if I can't get you

Here are a couple of others as well:

Zen café - Mies jonka ympäriltä tuolit viedään (Man around whom all the chairs are taken)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li1_Ro9e2_4&feature=related

Egotrippi - Matkustaja (Passenger)

haha...bleeding heart rappers!? not sure but I think it kind of contradicts the whole idea of rapping. :)

I'd like to put another song of this great band -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB27Az3xIpU&feature=PlayList& p=E779C2D6B8135F35&playnext_from=PL&index=1

of course it is yet another performance of the great swedish ballad but with the extraordinary voice of Emma Härdelin and the harmonic melody - emotions just burst out so strongly - they did right by this text - definitely the best version out there.

That song! I once was a stand-in for a hurdy-gurdy player at a Medieval gig. In fact, I learned to play the melody "Herr Mannelig" on the instrument the day before the gig since I didn't (nor don't) really play hurdy-gurdy. I've done crazier things than that.
