I have used several TYS courses and love them. I have used Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Improve Your Italian. I am looking forward to using French and German in the near future as well. I'd highly recommend them.

I wish they would fix the audio. There is way too much English on them. Actually, it would be nice if there wasn't any English on them. I would just want the dialogues recorded on them.

They could use the scripts for all of the languages such as Japanese and Korean. That would be nice instead of Romaji in those.

Also, put more vocabulary, dialogues, reading passages, and better audio. Then I might use these courses more often.

I agree! More audio, less English and more audio drills a-la FSI!!!!! With mp3's you should be able to get 24 hours of audio on a single disc ( see the Georgetown Arabic series)

* I assume all TY programs have these two features?

Not necessarily. I depends on the author. Mine have translations, but the conversations, apart from in the introduction, move at a fair pace. As an author, you receive a brief for what a language title in the series aims to accomplish and work to create a course with that in mind. It seems to be up to the authors how they achieve this goal, which allows the freedom to adapt material and pedagogy to a particular language.

* I tend to use the newer editions to break into the language if I have absolutely no grounding it, and then use the older versions, which are much more extensive.

You have to remember that the TY series is ames, primarily, at non-linguists who want to get to grips with the conversational language in as rapid and as easy a way as possible. This, of course, doesn't mean that they are not suitable for language enthusiasts, or more seasoned or academic language learners, as a starting block. They aim to take the beginner to a certain level, and I think they do a very good job of that. For Indonesian or Malay, I recommend starting with TY, and then, after about 7 units, to start using the Colloquial series alongside. Colloquial takes the student further, in the long run, but a lot of the functional language tends to be neglected. This way, you get the best of both worlds.

When I learn a new language, I buy several courses, as many others here do. You should see my Chinese collection!

* It's printed like a paperback, so the paper has a cheap feel to it.

The older ones with the pale blue covers were printed on cheap stock, it seems, but the last few generations have been of higher quality. The latest release, I am told, will be of a higher quality still. The thing is, for a complete, beginner's language course with 2 CDs, they are pretty good value. I don't know about the hiss, or the advert. It could be a feature of the US versions McGraw Hill publishes. The original UK editions are different, and come with CDs in jewel cases. I believe the plastic packs that the US versions come in can result in broken CDs! This has nothing to do with Teach Yourself!

I believe the Russisn course is very good, although I haven't used it.

That's what I like to hear!

This comes down to costs again. The book/CD packs come at a vert reasonable price. If you wanted more audio, the price would increase considerably. Not everyone uses MP3s, so the courses would have to be available as CDs in store, and that would mean higher costs and fewer sales. To create more audio, authors would have to be commissioned to extend the material; editors would need to be hired to edit and proofread it, and actors would need to be hired to create the recordings, not to mention the sound engineers... All of this means extra costs, and in the end, it does come down to costs.

Modern technology - MP3s, digitally delivered pdfs etc. - might make this possible in the future (but let me be clear here - I do NOT speak for Hodder as I do not work for them or know the ins and outs of the company), but for now, language-learning is still very much, first and foremost, a 'book and tape' market.

This is a bit off topic, but do you know if Georgetown has any other published courses like this? I have the Modern Russian I book and audio but I can't find anything similar for other languages.

The russian courses are good though I have problems with the beginners Turkish as I lost the book and the dialogue doesn't explain in English what some words mean enough. Once I get a new book it'll probably no longer be a problem.

I couldn't wait until Sept for the new Vietnamese so I just bought the current one (despite the poor reviews)

I love Teach Yourself Cantonese, it was my main text starting out.

So, don't use it. Simple.

I didn´t mean it as an offence, I just dont like the style, I'm sure that if you were entrusted to do Assimil Malay it would be great!
