Hi all,

I was just informed that I will be receiving an NSEP Boren Scholarship, a US government initiative that pays for
American citizens to study relatively obscure languages relevant to US national security interests (you can read
about it here). I will be studying Croatian (or BCS) in
Zagreb for 12 months and am so excited! That brings me to my next question--are there any current, past, or
future Boren scholars or fellows in this forum? Or anybody else who took advantage of government programs
(American or otherwise) to learn their languages?

Congratulations and keep us posted about your daily study in Zagreb, this sounds very exciting! We do have another member who does NSLI-Y - same goal, different outfit.

Thanks! It really is an incredible opportunity. The scholarship will cover everything: airfare, insurance,
housing/food, travel stipend, language instruction, etc. for 12 whole months. In exchange I will commit to
working for the US State Department, Department of Homeland Security, or the Intelligence Community (NSA,
CIA, DIA, etc.) for a period of a year or more when I return home.

This is what my program will be once I arrive in Zagreb this summer:

1. 1 month super-intensive summer language course

2. 2 months of private tutoring in Croatian

3. 9 month-long Croatian course at the University of Zagreb

I am shooting for advanced fluency by the time my year is up! And who knows---maybe I'll stay another year to
get to professional fluency! I can't wait!

How does one go about qualifying for one of these scholarships exactly?

The procedure differs from university to university, but first and foremost you have to be a matriculated
undergraduate or graduate student (Boren Fellows are grad students, Scholars undergrad). The website I listed in
my initial post has more about the program, application procedure, and eligibility. If it's a dead link, just go directly
to:

http://www.borenawards.org/boren_scholarship

[EDIT]: I changed "enrolled" to "matriculated"---they're slightly different things.

This sounds like a great experience, congratulations! Was Croatian your own choice or does the program assign you a language? I hope you have a great time and come back fluent in Croatian!

I chose to learn Croatian, but the possibilities are endless provided you can demonstrate in a (lengthy and well-
researched!) essay why your language and region of choice are relevant to US national security interests.

This year Boren Scholars are studying Ganda, Mongolian, Amharic, Quechua, Kyrgyz, Uighur--languages that make
Croatian seem as commonplace as Spanish or French!

Wow, that's really impressive. I hope that I can participate in this program at some point. Now, which language... That would be a difficult decision. :)
