I just had a skype conversation that showed a really nice improvement for me.

I think my first youtube video will show what i've done after 56 AP and 105 PP, and
then my second video will show when I'm completely done with both volumes of Assimil,
or all 105 AP. I'll subtitle them, and I hope this will inspire others to continue
with whichever course they are using. It could, however, just be a major
disappointment haha.

I definitely want to post videos reviewing my self study vs. classroom study; comparing
the IC text books vs. Self Study courses.

At which point I'll be moving onto Linguaphone's old 70's course. Preferably after
that I will be able to find a reasonably challenging intermediate reader or two, but if
not I will just use the NPCR series or Moses McCormick's FLR. The reason I want
something shorter is because I think I'll want to try out more than one thing to keep
my interest. Along the way I'll be posting videos and reviews, maybe some skype videos
with my language exchange friends or some level up videos a la Moses McCormick.

In about 10 days, I'll be completely done with Volume 1, it feels good. I can't
believe I've fallen in love with language learning. Talking with native speakers after
working so hard has got to be the healthiest high, ever.

Eggcluck, my feeling about their claims about the active phase is that they are
accurate within the extent of the content covered. For example, I do "accidentally"
use correct grammar that I haven't deliberately studied or tried to remember. But,
this is limited since the actual content of the book is so limited. Below is an
excerpt of the last lesson in Assimil's Chinese with Ease, as well as an excerpt of the
last lesson in Linguaphone's 1975 Chinese course. You can see the difference in the
complexity of grammar, the length of the sentences, as well as the range and depth of
the vocabulary.

"Tomorrow is the last lesson! We have almost finished the lessons! Eh? Not at all!
First: the study of Chinese is never-ending! Secondly: There are still more than fifty
lessons to revise! That's right! But revision is revision; it's not quite the same as
studying a new lesson!" - Assimil Lesson 104

"The exhibition building is filled with a peaceful and friendly atmosphere. The
exhibition building is spacious, the displays are abundant, so it is impossible to
finish seeing it in a short time. In the exhibition halls were displayed oil products,
and heavy industry products, textile goods, art handicraft products, etc., so the state
of China's Socialist construction could be taken in at a glance." - Linguaphone Lesson
30

I'm not sure if the English makes it incredibly clear, but looking at the constructions
in Mandarin reveals that Linguaphone goes to a much much higher level with more complex
and sophisticated sentences and compound phrases. There is a lot more recursion in
Linguaphones lessons, which to my mind makes it a great looking course to use after
Assimil. I can't wait to start it.

But yeah, I feel some reservations about making a video so soon after starting my study
of the language, but I think it will be good for people to see who are curious about
the books, despite all the mistakes I'll make and how slowly I'll be speaking. I'm not
going to write it out before hand, but I will certainly gather my thoughts and the
points that I want to make.
